President's Message
 Dear BSU campus community,
With Spring Break less than a week away, there is no letup in our busy and productive pace. The work of continually elevating the learning experience we provide our students is unending, but I am certain you all find it as rewarding as I do. My recent visits with alumni have proved once again what a truly educational experience we deliver here at BSU. Thank you for your excellent work!
Congratulations to students and faculty who presented such an impressive production of the opera “Pirates of Penzance” this past weekend. And hats off to our men’s and women’s hockey teams, who both reached the WCHA playoffs. Among other upcoming events, the Headwaters Film Festival is approaching, on March 28-29, and be sure to mark your calendar for the annual Student Achievement Conference on April 4.
It’s also time to nominate your colleagues for employee Awards of Excellence, to be presented at an all-campus breakfast on April 26. This awards program got off to a great start last year, and I trust you will again take advantage of the opportunity to honor and thank our many outstanding employees. The nomination deadline is March 23.
The Minnesota State system’s fiscal year 2019 budget demands our attention as well. Newly named Chancellor Dr. Devinder Malhotra, who had been in an interim role, will join with campus presidents, employees, students and alumni to seek the funds we need to properly serve students. I will keep you apprised of progress in St. Paul, including consideration of bond funding for the Hagg-Sauer project, which remains one of the system’s top priorities. This afternoon, I will have the opportunity to testify regarding Hagg-Sauer today before the House Education Committee.
In April we will begin recognition of the Bemidji State’s Centennial. You received information on Monday about several kick-off events planned for April 12. With your enthusiastic participation, this celebration of the university’s first 100 years will remain engaging for all 18 months of the planned observance. We have much to look back on with pride – and so much to look forward to for many years into our future!

Boudry receives "top paper" award
Dr. Valica Boudry, associate professor of integrated media, has received a top paper award for her research paper, "The Inside Out: The Need for Different Journalism Ethics in Ethnojournalism," which she will present at a conference in Milwaukee next month. Biology research featured on "Prairie Sportsman"
The work of two Bemidji State researchers will be featured on a “Prairie Sportsman” episode airing March 31 on Lakeland Public Television. Dr. Andy Hafs, assistant professor of biology, and Katti Renik (pictured), a biology graduate student from Bridgeport, Neb., are conducting a two-year study in northeast Minnesota on the relationship between beavers and brook trout. Hafs worked as the primary investigator while Renik has led the study’s field research.

Two art exhibits open on campus this month
Two art exhibitions are open on campus through the end of March — "Six McKnight Artists," featuring ceramics work produced by artists who have received fellowships from the Minnesota-based McKnight Foundation, is open in Bridgeman Hall's Talley Gallery through March 28, and the Midwinter Interlude, an annual exhibition featuring creative work produced by members of BSU's faculty and staff, is open in the Ramsey Gallery in the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex until April 19.

Devinder Malhotra to continue
as chancellor of Minnesota State
The Board of Trustees of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities voted March 2 to name Devinder Malhotra as the chancellor of Minnesota State. The move comes after a search committee forwarded to the Board of Trustees three finalists for consideration, and the board concluded that none of the three were the right individual to serve as chancellor for Minnesota State. After approval by the Board, Malhotra was offered a three-year contract to serve in the role of chancellor.

Three finalists for the position of assistant vice president for student life and success will interview on campus beginning March 20. Each candidate will have an open forum for members of the BSU and NTC campus communities during their interview days. Details are available on the website calendar:

Design senior wins 2018 EXHIBITOR Media Group
Student Achievement Award
Senior design major Kristin Knudson has received the 2018 EXHIBITOR Media Group Student Achievement Award. As this year’s recipient, she received an All-Access Passport to the EXHIBITORLIVE 2018 trade-show and corporate event marketing conference, held Feb. 25 – March 1 in Las Vegas, including a $500 scholarship to help offset travel expenses, a one-year subscription to EXHIBITOR magazine, and her name added to a plaque of previous winners displayed in Bridgeman Hall.

Grad students present fisheries research in Wisconsin
Four biology grad students presented at the 78th Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference, "Strengthening Natural Resources Through Collaboration," Jan. 28–31 in Milwaukee. More than 1,000 biologists and students from state federal, and tribal natural resources agencies from the Midwest, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and Canadian provinces were in attendance.

- The Department of Music brought Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic opera, “The Pirates of Penzance,” to Bemidji audiences with a modern twist, March 2-4.
- The Student Center for Health and Counseling sponsored a pair of March 6 training sessions covering aspects of the nation’s current opioid addiction epidemic.
- BSU Alumni & Foundation kicked off its 2018 Campus Campaign with a Feb. 15 social at the American Indian Resource Center. The event celebrated the continuing generosity of BSU faculty, staff and administration.
- The Department of Nursing officially welcomed 62 prospective nurses into its Class of 2020 at its traditional induction ceremony, held Feb. 17 in the Beaux Arts Ballroom.

Michael Bitzer sets BSU career saves record
With a 31-save performance in a 2-1 loss at Minnesota State on Feb. 23, senior goaltender Michael Bitzer became Beaver Hockey's all-time saves leader. With his 11th save of the game, he moved past BSU great Steve O'Shea into sole possession of first place on BSU's career leaderboard. O'Shea amassed 3,064 saves from 1985-89.
