Spring?

I started compiling this as we hit the "official" start of Spring. We've all seen too much weather coverage over the past few weeks so I won't labour the point but suffice it to say Lorna and I have not experienced cold like it since we moved here. When the temperatures were at their lowest the wind was coming from the ENE direction (along the channel) and upstairs we were freezing! We're pleased that we still have our original sash windows but........
This brief and shakey video (it was windy and my hands were freezing!) is what we woke to on the morning of 1st March.
The photo below was taken from a BBC news report. It was taken near Wheddon Cross which they announced was in North Devon. Fake news!

Enough said - let's look forward now to Summer now we've passed the start of astronomical spring. Second time lucky? Here's to a lovely season!

It's going to be an interesting 2018...

There are lots of plans afoot for "improving" Minehead and the marketing of the area to the rest of the world. There are various projects under way which have found funding from a variety of sources (including EDF's Hinkley Community Funds) and amongst other things the seafront is due to get a make-over when the planning is completed!
Coming up - events in the pipeline
  • West Somerset Railway - of course there are steam trains running throughout the season but the WSR also put on special events  - visit their website to see what's happening when you're coming
  • 33m high observation wheel - this was very popular last Summer and it was hope to have it back for the Easter holiday but scheduling problems have resulted in it being booked for the half term holidays instead. It will running between 25th May and 18th June. You get a great view!
  • Thundercat Inflatable Catamarans! There will be a weekend of powerboat and jet ski competitions in the Minehead bay on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of August. Promises to be exciting given what the Bristol Channel can throw at boats! Details on the Thundercats website
In the next few weeks I'll aim to get a list of 2018 events our website and Facebook page. As those of  you who have stayed before know, there's always something going on, somewhere!

Hinkley Point

Lorna and I have been helping at the Minehead Tourist Information Office since last Summer (it's just opened for the season this weekend) and through our connection there we went on an interesting visit to the building site that is to be the new Hinkley C nuclear reactor.
Whatever one's feelings are about nuclear power and the nuclear industry as a whole the Hinkley project is here to stay (or is it?!) and has already been having a sgnificant effect on the West Somerset economy and infrastracture so we thought we'd go and take  a look.
The scale of it is mind-boggling! The visit consisted of a coach trip from the EDF Hinkley Visitor Centre in Bridgwater and overall it lasted about 2 1/2 hours (including the journey from Bridgwater to the site and back). One of the interesting thing we saw was the construction-in-progress of a massive pier which will allow for much more of the building materials and components to be brought in by boat/ship, which will reduce the number of heavy vehicles on the road.
I mention it here because it did occur that there might be some among our guests who would find a visit interesting. A link to the Visitor Centre is below and I note that they only mention visits to the current reactor (Hinkley Point B) at the moment. I assume visits to the new site will depend on what stage the project is at - there may be more opportunities to visit when it's less muddy!
If you'd like to keep in touch with things going on in the Minehead area you might like to have a look a a recently launched Internet magazine, The Minehead & Exmoor Chronicle.

This is the most recent edition. You can view it in your browser and you'll see links to previous editions.
Data protection and not being a nuiscance...
There are some changes to Data Protection rules looming and it seems a good time to remind all of our subscribers that every newsletter incudes a link (below) which allows you to unsubscribe at any time. We don't want to intrude so if you'd rather not hear from us (after all, you know where we are!), by all means use it.
No hard feelings :o)

In the meantime, we look forward to hearing from you and hope you have a great 2018, wherever you may be!
