A Message from Our Vicar

Aloha Trinity by-the-Sea ‘Ohana,
     Here we are, in the third week of Lent, a season of prayerful reflection about who we are, who we’re called to be, and where we’re called to go. It’s a season of personal reflection, and also reflection as the church, the Body of Christ.
     Recently I ran across priest and theologian Hans Kung’s piece entitled, "The Church of the Future" in the St. James Episcopal Church, Hawai’i Island, newsletter, and I pass it along (with thanks to St. James) for your reflection.

     “To what kind of Christian, to what kind of church, does the future belong?

  • Not to a church that is lazy, shallow, indifferent, timid and weak in its faith;
  • Not to a church that expects blind obedience and fanatical party loyalty;
  • Not to a church that is a slave of its own history, always putting on the brakes, suspiciously defensive and yet, in the end forced into agreement;
  • Not to a church that is anti-critical, practically anti-intellectual and dilettantish;
  • Not to a church that is blind to problems, suspicious of empirical knowledge, yet claiming competent authority for everyone and everything;
  • Not to a church that is quarrelsome, impatient and unfair in dialogue;
  • Not to a church that is closed to the real world.

In short, the future does not belong to a church that is dishonest!

     No, the future belongs:

  • To a church that knows what it does not know;
  • To a church that relies upon God's grace and wisdom and has in its weakness and ignorance a radical confidence in God;
  • To a church that is strong in faith, joyous and certain, yet self-critical;
  • To a church filled with intellectual desire, spontaneity, animation and fruitfulness;
  • To a church that has the courage of initiative, and the courage to take risks;
  • To a church that is altogether open to the real world;

In short, the future belongs to a thoroughly truthful church!”

     For the last several months, we at Trinity by-the-Sea have been praying and talking about what God is calling us to be and do here in Kihei, as a “truthful,” open, listening, and discerning church. Our numbers are small, there is much to do, and sometimes the road ahead seems daunting. But God is faithful, and calls us to be faithful too. As we follow in our Lord’s steps... all the way to the cross, and then on to the empty tomb and the Resurrection, he bids us to be the church of the future. We may not know exactly where the road leads, but we do know the One we follow, and we know that he will not leave or forsake us.
     As you continue your Lenten journey, I pray that you will be refreshed and renewed as you turn again to the One who says, simply, “Follow me.”

Blessings,
Bruce+

Easter Flowers
Envelopes are available on the Welcome Table with which you can make a contribution towards Trinity's Easter flowers.
Donations can be made in Memory of a departed loved one or in Honor of a living loved one and they can also be made in Thanksgiving for a blessing - actually for whatever you desire!
These donations help to defray the cost of our beautiful Easter lilies and the plumeria flowers that are strung into the unique lei* that adorns our rugged wood hewn cross on Easter morning.

PS - *The stringing of the Easter lei will take place in Kilolani Hall on Holy Saturday morning at 10AM. Lei needle, string, and instruction is provided - fellowship and fragrance too! E komo mai!

Know Thy Neighbor
by Anne Kasin
The Honourable Pat Carney, PC CM
(Note: I have featured some of our SnowBirds/SnowAngels previously and will continue to do so. They come annually for varying amounts of time, are faithful Sunday attendees, often make an annual financial Pledge, and many now join our prayer/study/social Groups and help with church duties. They are such a gift, such a blessing! Enjoy getting to know them!)
    Pat's soft accent was noticeable when she consented to have her picture taken but, when she sent me her "official biography," I was open-mouthed wordless .... I had never expected such a title from such an unassuming sweet lady!
     Born in Shanghai, China of Canadian parents, Pat has strong roots in British Columbia where her Irish grandparents settled in the 1890s.  Her BA (Economics and Political Science) and MA (Community and Regional Planning) degrees were both from the University of British Columbia where she was also an Adjunct Professor for a decade.  She was a journalist and business columnist for two Vancouver publications, also writing for national and international newspapers such as the Times of London and the New York Times.  When a lengthy newspaper strike ended her journalism career in 1970, she and her young family moved to Yellowknife where she established Gemini North Ltd, a consulting firm advising on social, economic, and energy issues and, subsequently, she was soon recognized as a Canadian pioneer in the experiments and development of distance learning systems with the Satellite Tele-Education Program.
     In 1980, she became the first woman Conservative Member of Parliament ever elected in BC.  She was re-elected in 1984 and went on to be the first woman to hold three senior economic cabinet positions during her tenure. She retired from politics in 1988 due to health issues but, in 1990 however, Pat was summoned to the Senate of Canada where she served on numerous Standing Committees until her retirement in 2008! As Senator, her dedication and "extraordinary effort" in championing legislation for the preservation of Canada's heritage lighthouses and maritime history earned her the Governor's Award for Heritage Conservation. In her spare time, she has also been a tireless advocate for arthritis research in Canada. She holds several Honourary Doctor of Law degrees and has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for her various roles and achievements. As if that weren't enough, Pat has also written several books - the most recent being On Island: Life Among the Coast Dwellers, a fictional book of short stories.
     It's been a bit daunting to write about this amazing woman but, as I tried to consolidate her impressive accomplishments, I kept coming back to the simple, genuine, perceptive yet approachable personality that drew me to Pat in the first place and, as I spoke with her, I realized that she has experienced almost all of Trinity's history and I want to close with an overview in her own words.
     "I have been visiting Maui for more than 50 years and have been attending services at Trinity since they started in 1976, when the minister was Dr. Ault and the congregation was very small. I have observed the changes over those 40-odd years, including the good times and dark times.The biggest change has been the attitude of the permanent congregation to we "snow angels" as Father Austin called us. In the early years we felt very much excluded. I remember going on one whale watch when not a soul talked to me. Now we part timers are welcomed and feel part of Trinity. I really enjoy giving the readings when I attend. Trinity is my ohana family!"
     You are ohana, Pat! When are you coming back?
Regional 2018 Confirmation will be at Trinity by-the-Sea!
     This year, the regional Maui-Island Confirmation will be at 10:00am on Saturday, April 14. At this service, some will be Confirmed, some (who were confirmed in the past) will Reaffirm their Baptismal Vows, and some from other denominations who wish to join the Episcopal Church will be officially Received.
     What is Confirmation, and why do we do this? The sacramental rite of Confirmation is the renewal of one’s Baptismal Covenant, not its completion; baptism is complete in its own right/rite. From the moment of baptism, we belong fully to Jesus Christ. The waters of baptism both wash and welcome us. Confirmation, then, represents a mature decision for Christ, a recognition that we are washed in these waters and surrounded by grace, cleansed and buoyed up by the Holy Spirit.
     If you wish to be Confirmed, or to Reaffirm your Baptismal Vows, or be received into the Episcopal Church, please let Rev. Bruce know as soon as possible so arrangements can be made.
Da Clutter Sale - 2018
Saturday, March 24th
7AM to 2ish PM
     "A rose by any other name will smell the same" and rummage by any other name will still be rummage, BUT ... now, in its 3rd decade, Trinity's Annual Sale has a new name! Our ever-enthusiastic chairperson, Barb Zipf, has been excited about the term "Da Clutter" for months now and we have a (hopefully waterproof) 40 foot container that has been rapidly filling with Clutter of all description! Barb now needs everyone's help!
     1. We are accepting donations of just about anything - clothing, household items, bed and bath linens, toys, books, furniture, plants - but please no large gym equipment or TVs - and please hold onto your large donations until the week of the Sale.
     2. Help is needed all week prior to the Sale - starting on Monday, March 19th - to sort, separate, and price items. There is a sign-up sheet on the Welcome Table with dates and times. Please commit to at least one time frame - many hands make the work so much lighter - and more fun! A Zipf "perk" - workers have a delicious lunch provided!
     3. There will be a very short meeting after church on Sunday, March 18th - pep talk and strategy plans! Try to come - only 10 to 15 minutes!

Please contact Barb with any questions.
