About the Artist:

Respected Film maker and Artist, Lydia A. Douglas has lived in Brooklyn and DC but has settled in Ansonia, CT. where she was born and raised. Douglas received an MFA in film with a concentration in cinematography from Howard University in 1994 where she studied with Haile Gerima. Additionally, Douglas holds a BFA in photography from the University of Bridgeport received in 1982 where she was taught by students of Ansel Adams, Ralph Weiss and Cornel Cappa.

Douglas’ work has been exhibited at The Smithsonian Institute, and at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Maryland and numerous other institutions. Her photography has been published in numerous books including Debra Willis' book "Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 - the Present."

Her documentary film “Nappy” originally shot in the mid-90s garnered critical acclaim and won numerous awards after its release, was aired on PBS, and is widely considered one of the earliest films to document the contemporary natural hair movement among Black women. Nappy, a pioneering film that directly addresses the “politics” of Black women’s hair will be screened at Soul de Cuba Cafe on Sunday, March 18th from 4pm followed by a Q & A with film maker, Lydia A.
