Hi Moms and Dads

PLEASE SEND IN ANY OUTSTANDING SPONSOR FORMS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

For your information- Please note that we have had a case of Childhood “Hand, Foot and Mouth’ illness in the Turtle Class. Please read the information below and monitor your children for any symptoms.

Facts About Hand-Foot-and-Mouth

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease, or HFMD, is caused by a virus. Symptoms include ulcers, or sores, inside or around the mouth, and a rash or blisters on the hands, feet, legs, or buttocks. And while it's not pleasant, it also isn't serious.
Anyone can get the disease, but children under age 10 are most likely to catch it. You can take steps to ease the symptoms while it runs its course, though.

What Causes It?
The viruses that usually cause hand-foot-and-mouth are named coxsackievirus a16 and enterovirus 71. In fact, you might hear your child’s doctor refer to it as the coxsackie virus.
Your child can catch hand-foot-and-mouth through contact with someone who has it, or from something that's been in contact with the virus, like a toy, tabletop, or doorknob. It tends to spread easily in the summer and fall.

Symptoms
Early symptoms may include fever and a sore throat. Painful blisters similar to cold sores can show up on the inside of your child's mouth or on his tongue.
He might get a rash on the palms of his hands or the soles of his feet a day or two after the first symptoms appear. This rash may turn into blisters. Flat spots or sores may pop up on the knees, elbows, or buttocks. He could have all of these symptoms, or only one or two.
Mouth sores can make it hurt to swallow, so be sure your child gets enough water and calories.

How Is It Diagnosed?
Your doctor will ask about your child’s symptoms and look at any sores or rashes. This is usually enough to decide if it’s hand-foot-and-mouth disease with no extra tests. But he might take a throat swab or a stool or blood sample to be sure.

How Is It Treated?
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease should go away on its own after 7 to10 days. There is no treatment for the illness and no vaccine. You can ease your child’s symptoms with:
• Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) or numbing mouth sprays. Don’t use aspirin for pain -- it can cause serious illness in children.
• Cold treats like Popsicles, yogurt, or smoothies soothe a sore throat.
• Anti-itch lotion, like calamine, can help against rashes.
Stop the Spread
Your child is most contagious in the first 7 days. But the virus can stay in her body for days or weeks after symptoms go away and it could spread through her spit or poop. The best way to prevent that is to wash hands thoroughly. That applies to you, too, after you change a diaper or wipe a runny nose.
Your child should be fever- and symptom-free before she goes back to school or daycare. Check with your doctor if you aren’t sure whether she’s still contagious.
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is not the same as foot-and-mouth disease, which comes from a different virus and only affects animals.

The children enjoyed the first cake sale of the year. Thank you for supporting it and sending in cakes and treats.
Reports will be handed out on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 March. I have put up a roster for you to fill in on our notice board in the class. Please select a time that suits you to have a meeting with me to collect and talk about your child's report.
This week we will be learning about our body parts, their purpose and how they function. We sing lots of body song and do actions involving the various body parts. I have noticed that children still confuse elbows, shoulders, wrists, hips and ankles. please re-inforce these parts at home when getting dresses or playing games eg I'm thinking of a body part that is in the middle of your arm and helps your arm to bend.
In maths this week we will compare the difference and similarities between day and night and relate it to time. This is an introduction to time - morning, afternoon and night. We will also discuss height- short and tall. I will link it to ordinal number each group will organise themselves from the shortest to the tallest and vice versa. We will then give their position- 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. I will continue to develop and extend the children's awareness of shapes in the environment and in pictures.
Thank you so much for sending so many things in for the Language Table. The children loved showing everyone their pictures and objects and everyone is encouraged to talk about what they bring. It is such a good exercise as I link it to maths and also use the objects sent in to teach general knowledge. We counted how many children brought umbrellas and we compared the umbrellas by discussing their similarities and differences.  As I mentioned at the Parent Discussion my aim is to get the children to think critically and solve problems and not just teach facts. You can send real objects, drawings done by the children or pictures from a magazines. It's a great opportunity for you to spend quality time with your child and it will help to extend their language skills.
In EQ last week we discussed our feelings and emotions in various situations and how we can respond in a positive manner. I told stories relating to being bullied, being left out of a game, feeling lonely and dealing with fighting. In each situation we discussed all the characters feeling and how they responded in the situation and alternative ways they could have responded.
Activities and skills to practice at home- colours, shapes, cutting exercises, writing names correctly according to the script I sent home in week 2. Please continue to make your children aware of shapes in the environment. 3 d shapes are solid and fat not flat and they take up space - a sphere(ball), cylinder(a can), cube(dice), cuboid or rectangular prism ( a building tall), a cone( party hat) and a pyramid. Help your child to learn their date of birth eg 12 May.

Hello everyone,
Trusting you had a good weekend.
This week we are learning about Senses, encouraging children to use all their senses. We will also gather and sort objects in nature and use them in our Art activities. At home, provide opportunities for your child to experience things through their senses. For example walk barefooted on the beach, play with soap, foam, bake etc.
Please note every Wednesday we are going to have 'show and tell'. Please help children choose their show and tell items which are theme related.
Interviews are on the 19th and 20th of March. Please find the time slot that is convenient to you from the form in our Classroom and sign in.
Enjoy your week,
Stella and Lorraine.

Turtle

Hi to all our Turtle Class parents.
I just want to introduce myself to you, my name is Linda Metcalf and I will be helping Mastoera and Mama Patience to take care of your little ones  for a while until they can find a great teacher for our class. I am so looking forward to spending time playing with them all and taking care of their special needs. They are all precious and cute.
Please if your child has a favourite book or puppet book he or she likes to look at please send to school for us to read it to them. I will keep it on my safe shelf. Please remember to bring in a fruit every morning with their snack so we can cut little pieces for them to share. I have an open door policy. If you need to chat to me or tell me anything, if I can I will be available.
Have a great week ahead.
