The 2nd annual Battle of the Food Scientists was held at the Food Innovation Center on February 28th. Teams consisting of students and a faculty member competed against each other and the clock over the course of two rounds. The final victor was Team #1, consisting of Justin Tran, a Food Science junior and assistant professor Dr. Byron Chaves. The event was live-streamed over Facebook and received considerable media attention. Attendees viewed the live stream from the Conagra Room and enjoyed pizza, snacks, and prizes. Graduate Support and Office Associate, Connie Gebhardt retired on March 2nd. Connie served the University for nearly thirty years and was part of the FST Administration Unit for almost ten years. Connie was honored with a gathering at The Mill and a certificate with a three jeweled pin for her years of service. We wish her well.
Chris Ebbers has joined the Department as the International Student Success Navigator. Chris' position will assist incoming 3+1 Program students from China and current UNL FST Students assimilate together next fall in Lincoln. Chris holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Business and Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
On February 15th, Dr. Amanda Ramer-Tait presented a lecture on Individuality in Gut Microbiota Responses to Diet at the February Reseach Group Meeting of the Plant Science Innovation Group. https://www.unl.edu/psi/
The 2018 Student Banquet will be held Thursday, April 26, 2018, 6:00 PM at the Wick Alumni Center. Dr. Curt Weller will welcome attendees to the event as the Department of Food Science and Technology recognizes student scholarship award winners, views highlights from the 2018 Battle of the Food Scientists contest, and hears a presentation from the Food Science Club. The Alliance for Advanced Sanitation is calling for research proposals. The purpose of this request for proposals is to encourage innovative research in the area of sanitation and assist investigators to initiate and/or develop concepts that will deliver improved technologies and methods to the food industry. Agricultural Operations Specialist 3 - Penn State University
The Penn State Department of Food Science is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Teaching Laboratory Support Specialist. The candidate will assist faculty members with the instruction of students performing exercises in the laboratory and pilot processing areas as part of undergraduate courses, as well as contribute to the instruction of laboratory or pilot plant components of outreach short courses and workshops. The candidate will develop protocols for the delivery of laboratory and processing exercises and train and supervise teaching assistants. The candidate will maintain an inventory of required chemicals, supplies, and laboratory equipment, and ensure the facilities required for instruction are well maintained and in good order.

Assistant Professor of Food Science  - University of Connecticut
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut is soliciting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Food Science. Food Science Research Assistants  - Penn State University
The College of Agricultural Sciences department of Food Science is seeking students and non-students for the Fall 2018 semester. Duties to include: Conduct organized research in the area of food chemistry/food microbiology including Perform independent literature searches and prepare summaries of topics pertinent to ongoing and future research; prepare summaries of research projects conducted in the laboratory; conduct research under the direction of the PI leading to peer-reviewed publication; assist PI with grant preparation; perform analytical procedures and protocols as directed; Collect and analyze data from ongoing research projects; supervise undergraduate and graduate student researchers in the lab.

R&D - OPUS International
OPUS International is an executive search company in the food science industry, and we have a client who has put together a Breakthrough Innovation team in R&D which will be working in the ‘fuzzy’ front end of new product development.  Our client is a $3.5 billion food manufacturer of bakery and dairy products with 26 manufacturing plants around the world.  This position would involve all innovation work, looking at industry trends, working with marketing, and creating new products that don’t currently exist in the marketplace. A BS or MS degree in Food Science is preferred with 3-7 years of industry experience, but more importantly, the background and passion for innovation in food products R&D are critical.
