The Philharmonik is the stage name of Christian Gates, a 24-year-old future soul and R&B multi-instrumentalist, singer and rapper in Sacramento. He's earned a reputation for putting on electrifying live performances all over Sac town.

His music blends contemporary rap and hip-hop influences like J. Cole and Kanye West with classic R&B, soul and funk artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Parliament and Earth, Wind & Fire. He also cites pop rock influences like The Beatles, Steely Dan and The Police. (Check out his "My Biggest Influences" playlist.)

He's already released some music videos to acclaim in outlets like AfroPunk and Sacramento's local NPR affiliate, CapRadio. Check out "Mama's House" and "Neon Lights".

Sol Collective and the Sol Life Media label continue sparking movement in Austin, TX at SXSW by partnering for the 4th official Global Local Showcase with indigenous music culture curators, Revolutions Per Minute at the Speakeasy (412 N. Congress Avenue, Austin TX) on Saturday, March 17th from 8pm - 2am. RSVP HERE!

A project of Sol Collective, Sol Life Media is a musically progressive cooperative record label, artist development model, and growing grassroots network which continues to grow via collective collaboration. By integrating the workflows of artists and support roles into a more dynamic, collaborative, and feedback-driven process, Sol Life aims to remix traditional roles of record labels, artist managers, and booking agents into a more streamlined, accessible and inclusive system that is effective and sustainable for artists.

Revolutions Per Minute is a global new music platform, record label, artist collective, and boutique agency for Indigenous music culture. RPM’s mission is to build a visionary community of Indigenous artists and to introduce Indigenous music to new audiences across Turtle Island and around the world. They curate and produce dynamic live presentations of cross-genre performance in partnership with festivals, events, communities, and as part of their annual RPM Live series. RPM Records is the first of its kind: a label for contemporary, cross-genre Indigenous music, run by Indigenous people and selected by The FADER as one of “5 New Canadian Record Labels The Entire World Should Know."

Artists on this year’s Global Local line-up range from voices celebrating struggles and triumphs as contemporary North American creators on a quest for recognition & equality, to renegade syncretists using electronic music to negotiate North/South/East/West via the past and present, to unapologetic wordsmiths on a mission to rebalance the world. Performing artists on the lineup include DJ Jigue, Tall Paul + Mic Jordan, Boogat, Kayla Briet, Seti X, La Misa Negra, Ziibiwan, Nani Castle, The Philharmonik, Frank Waln, Jam No Peanut, DJ Novela and El Indio and more!

About The Showcasing Artists:
Boogat is a Canadian/Mexican MC who has a unique artistic approach, pushing the boundaries of Latin Music beyond Hip-Hop & Electronica.

DJ Jigue is Cuba’s answer to J Dilla, making experimental electronica music that weave Afro-Cuban traditional rhythms and drums with pounding, mysterious electronic beats.

DJ Novela spins the soundtrack of community movements and is based in Sacramento, California.

El Indio is part of the group World Hood, blending afro-latin dub with West Coast bass.

Frank Waln is an award-winning Sicangu Lakota Hip Hop artist/producer from the Rosebud Reservation in North Dakota.

Jam No Peanut is a rapper, multimedia artist & revolutionary on the frontlines of resistance against mass incarceration.

Kayla Briët is an award-winning artist reclaiming the stories of her Indigenous, Dutch-Indonesian, and Chinese heritage.

La Misa Negra is a 7-piece band from Oakland, California, blending heavyweight cumbia and lively Afro-Latin music.

Lido Pimienta is the powerful Polaris Prize winning Colombian Canadian firebrand musician, singer, and songwriter.

Nani Castle is a fierce NYC born and raised MC with Chilean rebel roots, a cross between Wu-Tang and Stevie Nicks.

Seti X is a Los Angeles based MC building bridges between California and India.

Tall Paul + Mic Jordan, Tall Paul is an Anishinaabe and Oneida Hip-Hop artist enrolled on the Leech Lake reservation in Minnesota. Mic Jordan is a Hip-Hop Artist and an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe Tribe in Belcourt, ND.

The Philharmonik is a funky multi-instrumentalist out of Sacramento, California, a refreshingly creative force whether singing, rapping, producing, or playing keys.

Ziibiwan is an emerging Anishinaabe, electronic artist/producer from Toronto, Ontario.
