Notes from the Garden
As you may know, winter is a slow time for gardening in North Carolina. After much of the garden was cleared out after leaves were frozen and growth was stunted, we were left with the task of cleaning up! We recently harvested the last of our collards and kale that had hung on through everything this winter threw at it—snow, long periods of freezing temperatures, and the occasional scorcher! A peek at our perennial asparagus revealed that at least one small asparagus head has ventured out of the ground!
Our garlic crop is looking strong and we are thankful for this plant that is not only hardy to the cold, but also to the accidental steps of little feet. Carrots, mustards, spinach, and beets have been direct seeded, and many of our cool weather plants have been started in the baby greenhouse. After a brief run-in with the greenhouse mouse, our starts are growing again with no threat of getting munched. (Don't worry, the mouse was merely relocated after being lured into a box with some almond butter.) We are excited as we will begin to plant more with students in the coming weeks!

Farmer Spotlight!
Our newest farmer joined us February 1st. Hannah Ball-Damberg is a Durham native and is an alumna of Club Boulevard Elementary and DSA. She is excited to return to work with students in the very school system in which she grew up! At Oberlin College, Hannah studied Environmental Studies and Geology, with a concentration in environmental education. For the past several years, Hannah has worked in production farming at Lil' Farm and other local farms. With a background in environmental and nutrition education, Hannah fits in well at the Hub Farm and we are thrilled to have her here. When she's not at the farm, you can find Hannah exploring new places and the outdoors, cooking and fermenting food!

What's New (and on its way) to the Hub Farm!
The Hub Farm is moving on up in the world! Last week, construction on our new roof was completed thanks to Alex with A to Z Contractors and the Town & Country Garden Club. What a relief! No more leaks on our tools and supplies! Since the roof is fixed, a large greenhouse is coming soon. We will be able to propagate plants during all seasons with students!
Don't tell our forest predators, but this week, we are picking up day-old chicks that will soon join us at the farm once they have their real feathers. Stay tuned for THE CUTEST pictures to come. PS our ducks (really just our female mallard) have started laying eggs—how exciting!
Later in March, we are picking up our new packages of bees! Now that several of our staff have been through bee school with the Durham Beekeepers Association, we are hopeful for the survival of our bees! Later this summer, we anticipate some new livestock will move in too. Lots of exciting stuff! Be sure you stay updated through all of our social media channels :)
