Fungicide Resistance – We knew that states near Iowa had reported some fields where fungicide resistance had been identified. Now plant pathologists at Iowa State University and University of Kentucky have confirmed that isolates of Cercospora sojina, the pathogen that causes frogeye leaf spot of soybean, have shown resistance to quinone outside inhibitor (QoI, strobilurin) fungicides in some Iowa fields. You can read more at  Frogeye Leaf Spot Fungicide Resistance Confirmed in Iowa Soybean

Moth Trapping – In 2018, we want to include more Iowa cooperators to help us with black cutworm and true armyworm trapping. Having more traps around the state will help us refine pest movement and scouting/treatment windows. If you are willing to establish a location in 2018, please reach out to our IPM team at bugtraps@iastate.edu with your contact information, including mailing address and county where trap will be placed. Cooperators will monitor traps every other day, from early April to late May, and report trap captures to us weekly. Supplies and instructions will be mailed to you in late March.
On-Farm Research Opportunity - Researchers at ISU are looking for farmer cooperators interested in a specific field trial focused on the effects of cover crops and green manure amendments on soybean diseases (specifically SDS, IDC, White mold and Fusarium root rot). For the 2018 season, we need some grower fields with a history of White mold where we can establish strips of ‘spring oats’ and ‘no oats’. Ideally, the growers would have an idea of the areas of their fields where there is highest disease pressure so we could plant the strips there. Strips would be about 100 feet long and replicated four times for a total of eight strips. The researchers would do the following operations on those fields:
1- Plant oat strips in mid-late March
2- Kill the oats ~ 2 weeks before planting soybean
3- Plant soybeans late April - early May
4- Visit the field 2-3 times in the season for disease ratings and taking plant samples
     5- Harvest the strips
The ISU researchers would take care of all the field operations for the trial. For the 2019 season, we will want to include rye and fall oats as treatments, so we are also looking for fields where we can establish fall cover crops this fall. If you are interested, please contact me and I will get you in touch with those running the project.

Upcoming Events:
** Private Pesticide Continuing Instruction continues.  The entire schedule for the nine counties where I will be teaching this winter is located here, but only about 7 remain!

**Cover Crops in the Loess Hills field day, March 28 – A field day will be held at the Western Research Farm near Castana on Wednesday, March 28, from 10 am to 2 pm.  Field day topics include protecting the land from wind and water erosion, fencing and watering considerations when grazing cover crops, cover crop seeding and termination methods in the Loess Hills, ISU cereal rye and stocker cattle grazing project update, and grazing effects on soil density and subsequent crop yields. The field day is free and includes a noon meal. Reserve a spot by calling Monona County Extension at 712-423-2171. The Western Research Farm address is 36515 HWY E34, Castana.

**NEW Online Herbicide Resistance and Weed Management Course! Dealing with herbicide resistance can be expensive. In fact, the United States Department of Agriculture estimates the cost of dealing with herbicide resistance once it occurs to be $20 to $60 per acre. Plan ahead and check out the NEW online Herbicide Resistance and Weed Management course.
This online, interactive and self-paced course contains narrated presentations, lesson activities and resources to provide farmers and agribusiness professionals the tools to develop long-term weed management plans to help delay the development of herbicide resistance. The cost of the course is $50 and is available through the ISU Extension store here: https://store.extension.iastate.edu/product/15367. Those who complete the course are eligible for 3.0 integrated pest management Certified Crop Advisor continuing education units. In order to receive CCA credits, the entire course must be completed.
The materials for this online course were originally developed by Iowa State University and Outreach field agronomists along with weed scientists Bob Hartzler and Mike Owen for a series of face-to-face Weeds Week workshops.

**Crop Scout School in Ames - The Iowa State University Extension Field Crop Scout School prepares individuals with little or no previous crop scouting experience, providing a foundation of basic skills for corn and soybean crop scouting in the Midwest. This program has been designed for beginning crop scouts to ensure they are ready for success when they go to the field. Correctly identifying pests in the field is critical for selecting the correct tools to economically manage the issue. The course features sessions on corn and soybean growth and development, weed, disease and insect identification, along with scouting methods and techniques. This school will be held on March 24 in Ames. For details, check here.
