Welcome to the March issue of our Connect newsletter. A public poll that we have commissioned has found that the most trusted professionals in Ireland are engineers and doctors. 90% of Irish adults trust engineers to tell the truth and, of the 10 professions listed, only doctors are more trusted.
These findings and more, are all available in our new barometer report called Engineering 2018 (PDF), which was launched on 27 February (see picture above). We developed the report for the engineering profession in Ireland, capturing trends in engineering employment, perspectives and education. The report is based primarily on three surveys conducted between October 2017 and February 2018 with qualified engineers, engineering employers and the general public.
The report also shows that 91% of Irish adults regard engineers as highly competent. Additionally, industry demand for engineering talent has seen graduate engineer starting salaries increase by 11% in the past four years. There is more detail about the salary survey which forms part of the report below. The report shows that one of the biggest challenges facing the profession - and today is International Women’s Day - continues to be bridging the gender gap, as just 16% of engineering graduates are women.
Our Engineers Week got off to a flying start on 24 February, with over 800 events scheduled to take place. However with some cancellations due to Storm Emma, we are asking organisers to reschedule activities where possible. The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, TD, helped us get the message out this week as you will see below.
Finally there is a reminder to book for our Annual Conference with our Thomond Region coming up very soon, 13 April, in Limerick city.

Salary Survey 2018, an exclusive member-only report
|

In January we surveyed 2,271 Engineers Ireland members for our latest salary survey.
Some key take-outs are that approximately 44% of engineers with 3-10 years of experience received a pay increase of more than 5% in the past year and graduate engineer salaries increased by 11% in the past four years.

Other findings include the fact that a Chartered Engineer can expect to earn approximately €3,000-€5,000 per year more than an engineer without a professional title. For example, while a typical engineer without a professional title with 11 to 15 years’ experience earns €59,000, a Chartered Engineer who graduates in the same year earns €62,500.
The median salaries for engineers in 2018, with reference to years of experience, according to our report, are as follows:
- 1-2 years - €31,000
- 3-5 years - €37,000
- 6-10 years - €45,750
- 11-15 years - €60,000
- 21-25 years - €77,500
- 26-30 years - €82,900
- >30 years - €92,750

Four organisations awarded our CPD Accredited Employer Standard in February |

On Tuesday, 27 February, we were delighted to welcome four organisations to our office in Dublin to celebrate and reward their achievements in gaining our CPD Accredited Employer standard. Pictured is our President Dr Kieran Feighan, addressing the organisations last week.
Our CPD Accredited Employer Standard is a strategic framework which enables engineers and engineering-led employers raise competency levels and deliver tangible business benefits by investing in their engineers through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
The four organisations join over 170 firms that have achieved our standard to date.
The four organisations are:
- Atkins Ireland
- CORA Consulting Engineers (Casey O’Rourke Associates)
- Monaghan County Council
- TJ O'Connor & Associates Consulting Engineers
Atkins Ireland is a global multi-disciplinary firm with capabilities across many aspects of engineering.
CORA Consulting Engineers operates from Dublin and provides a wide range of structural and civil engineering services.
Monaghan County Council provides a vast range of services through its engineering team.
TJ O'Connor & Associates Consulting Engineers has an 81-year history as a consulting engineering firm offering civil and structural services.
These four diverse organisations (global and Irish consulting engineering firms, and also a local authority) range in size in terms of staff numbers, demonstrating how the standard is beneficial to a wide variety of organisations.

Energy Ambassadors Programme and our North East Region

Claire Hughes, B.A., B.A.I, MSc, C.Eng, MIEI, pictured, is the Secretary of the North East Region of Engineers Ireland and discusses some of the events in planning for 2018 organised by the North East Committee.
The North East Region of Engineers Ireland is a vibrant and diversified region with an active committee involving engineers from numerous engineering backgrounds, which informs the committee’s programme of events.
We wanted to run an event which informs and educates homeowners, community groups, businesses and all other interested parties on what simple steps we can all take to reduce our energy usage, use more renewable energy and save money.
One such initiative which is happening in consultation with Dunleer (County Louth) Community Development Board (DCDB) includes the setting up of The Energy Ambassadors Programme with the aim of delivering an education programme on energy savings. It’s a seventy-minute highly interactive workshop.
The content is endorsed by the Centre for Renewables and Energy at Dundalk Institute of Technology (CREDIT) and is delivered by the Energy Team, with information on:
- Practical tips on how to achieve energy efficiency in conserving and controlling energy in our homes and places of work
- Understanding the sources of renewable energy and what are the recent developments in technologies and products in the area
- Sharing knowledge and providing advice and guidance to communities on the advantages of working together to access funding and grants for energy upgrades
The delivery team consists of a qualified energy specialist plus a community leader and workshops have been held in Louth, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick, Wicklow and Dublin to date. The next opportunity to participate in the Programme is in County Louth on March 12 and details are below.
Admission is free and all are welcome to attend, however interested attendees must register their attendance in advance to ensure everyone can be catered for on the night.
In the coming year, we hope to organise speakers on the effects of Brexit on the border region, the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulations, site visits to a wind farm and the new Combilift factory in County Monaghan, in addition to social events.

Engineers Week continues through March with support from Minister Bruton
|
|
|
|
Over 800 events and activities were scheduled to take place last week in schools, libraries and organisations nationwide, making Engineers Week 2018 our most successful year yet in terms of event numbers and outreach.
While hundreds of these events have successfully taken place, a number of events were postponed because of the bad weather.
We now plan to continue with Engineers Week celebrations throughout the month of March. We are delighted to have the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD’s support in this regard. He is pictured above supporting our call with Director General, Caroline Spillane, Brooke Walton (5) and Stevie the Robot, created by robotics engineers from Trinity College Dublin.
