Queens win 7th Debating Competition

Congratulations to Queens' School, this year's Watford Debating Champions!

I was pleased to invite teams of students from years 10 to 13, from eight local schools, to Parliament for my seventh annual inter-school debating competition.

I'd like to thank all the students who took part and also our illustrious panel of judges. I am always so impressed at the high quality of these debates and the effort the students put into the competition, and this year was no exception. I know the judges found it so hard to choose between the finalists as both teams were fantastic. All schools did themselves proud.

This is a real highlight of my year and I’m already looking forward to next years!

I think its so important to engage young people with politics and debating is a great way of gaining confidence and public speaking experience.

#PassOnPlastic

Over 8 million tonnes of plastic enters our oceans every year, and so I'm supporting the #PassOnPlastic campaign.

I'm encouraging local businesses to do their bit and commit to reducing single-use plastic consumption. We all have a role to play in protecting our oceans and making small changes can make a huge difference. That's why I'm pledging to reduce my own use of disposable cups, plastic straws and plastic cutlery.

It's great that so many companies in Watford are already making changes to protect our oceans. For example, The Grove Hotel have already committed to only serving drinks with paper straws on request.
