1. Anniversary Feature

Developing our understanding of malaria parasite biology and host biology

As part of the Malaria Centre’s monthly anniversary feature, this issue focusses on how research from members of the Centre have contributed to developing our understanding of malaria parasite biology and host biology. By presenting specific examples we show how the research contributes to, and underpins, our understanding of malaria control.

Parasite Biology

Malaria Centre research teams have focused on numerous exciting aspects of malaria parasite biology over the last 20 years. Many of the breakthroughs have been made possible by huge technical advances such as our ability to perform whole genome sequencing and reverse genetics...

Host Biology

In parallel to the advances made in malaria parasite biology, landmark studies spearheaded by members of the LSHTM Malaria Centre have also contributed to a better understanding of the host immune response to malaria infection, as well as mechanisms underlying the development of severe disease...

Successul showcase

Thank you to everyone who presented at our first PhD showcase event on 13 February, and thank you to everyone who came along too!

This event would not have been possible without the efforts of the PhD student representatives Ryan Henrici and Stephanie Nofal. The Malaria Centre Steering Committee would like to express its thanks to Ryan and Stephanie for their hard work and planning to ensure the showcase was a success. It was a great way to start our anniversary celebrations and is something we are keen to continue in the future.

£4.1m grant to continue world-leading research into health problems in low and middle-income countries

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has been awarded more than £4m by the Medical Research Council (MRC) for continued research into the health problems of low and middle-income countries (LMICs), which include emerging infectious diseases, adolescent health and non-communicable diseases.

The work will be conducted by LSHTM's MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group (TEG), led by Professor Helen Weiss.

4. Conferences

MIM information

With just over a month to go until MIM, you can find out the latest information from the conference website

For those of you new to MIM or Dakar, the conference centre (Centre des Conferences de Diamniadio) and main airport (Blaise Diagne International Airport) are located outside of Dakar. There are hotels in Dakar, as well as a few others south of the conference (e.g. in Saly).

For LSHTM staff and students, LSHTM has a travel approval form (search for iTravel in service desk) that needs to be completed at least 5-15 days before travelling, and a checklist of things to do (search for Travelling overseas for School business in service desk and select the FAQ). There is also an e-learning course, along with more information on travelling, on the LSHTM intranet, under Services, Travel.

The checklist also has links to recommended vaccines for travel, so please do check to make sure you are covered.

The Malaria Centre at MIM

Booth
The Malaria Centre will have a booth at the conference, and so, in preparation for this we are gathering a list of all our LSHTM malaria-related project locations. If you are not listed on the website or in the previous annual report please do let us know the title of your project and its location so we can create a map of where our projects are based, and have an awesome set of materials to display at MIM.

Projects
Also we’d love to know if any staff or students from LSHTM, or our collaborators, have had an abstract accepted for MIM. Please do let us know and we can help promote your talk.

For the above, please send all correspondence to malaria@lshtm.ac.uk

Reception
Finally, Alumni and the Malaria Centre will be putting on a reception at MIM on 17 April at 18:30. We will provide more information on the venue soon, but in the meantime don't forget to register!

Happy MIM preparation!
