Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. This year we want to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging friends and collaborators to become partners in movement toward acceptance and appreciation.

Let’s embrace a new perspective. For over 50 years we have worked in communities (both large and small) to ensure our actions, through our services and programming, supported all individuals living with autism. Let’s expand this work to focus on the rest of us – ensuring acceptance and inclusion in schools and communities that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people. We want to get one step closer to a society where those with ASDs are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts.

Join us in celebration for 2018 National Autism Awareness Month! National Autism Awareness Month represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.

History of Month of the Military Child
In 1986, Secretary of Defense Casper W. Weinberger decided to recognize the sacrifices made by children of military service members. He believed that military children are inspirational because of the way they respond to stressful situations, such as frequent moves and separated families during periods of deployment. Now, 32 years later we have a nationally recognized celebration, honoring the children of military service members.

What is Purple Up?
It is a dedicated day in April, this year being the 13th, where everyone can celebrate military children by wearing the color purple. Why Purple? Purple has special meaning in the military; it is anything “Joint”, or where different U.S. branches of the military are working together for a common goal.

IDEA Manual, A Guide for Parents and Students About Special Education Services in Texas, 2016 Edition is the newest version of what has become known as The IDEA Manual. This manual is designed to help you become familiar with the requirements of IDEA and Texas law so you can act as an equal partner in planning your child’s education.

The IDEA Manual is based upon laws and policies in place at the time it was written. Laws and policies change frequently and are subject to various interpretations. Future changes in laws and policies may make some information in this manual outdated. This manual is not intended to and does not replace an attorney’s advice or assistance based on your particular situation.

This is a joint project of The Arc of Texas and Disability Rights Texas.

Use this list of common interview questions with your teen to help boost her chances for success.

ADHD-Friendly Schedule Fixes for Working Parents
“Help! I know children with ADHD need consistent schedules, but what can working parents or parents with inconsistent schedules do to help their kids?”
Being consistent with schedules,  instructions, and discipline as parents to children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is hard enough for parents who work regular hours, so I understand your dilemma, but hopefully my experiences as an adult with ADHD and as a special education teacher and ADHD coach will help.

Youth Leadership Training & Workshops
The intent of these workshops and trainings is to teach youth (14 - 26 years) with disabilities how to self-advocate. Self-Advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself, making your own decisions about your own life, learning how to get information so that you can understand things that are of interest to you, finding out who will support you in your journey, knowing your rights and responsibilities, reaching out to others when you need help and friendship, and learning about self-determination.
