Keep Highgate Tidy

Saturday 3 March 12 to 2pm
This event may not have the cachet or the glamour of The Great British Bake Off but it has all the ingredients to stir up community action.  The Highgate Society, in conjunction with the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, plans to spring clean the village on Saturday March 3rd at 12 noon.

Andrew Sulston, the initiative organiser locally said, “Old clothes should be worn, but we will provide plastic gloves and all necessary clearing materials, including rags and buckets. The intention is to collect litter, but also to note down other points that need looking at in order to let relevant bodies know. There will also be a focus on removing drawing pins from trees which have been used to attach notices, as this is detrimental to tree health. By reporting back to the local councils our drive is two-pronged; an immediate and remedial action, with the aim of further resolution and a sustained response”.

Volunteers will meet at the Society,10A South Grove for a walk around Highgate at 12 noon, to finish by 2pm.  Soup and bread will be served to volunteers afterwards – Ready Steady Cook.

Use your money for good......  and get a good return

Ethical investing is growing. More and more people are choosing to take their money out of the nasties like tobacco, fossil fuels, and weapons and invest positively - eg in low carbon energy, tackling poverty, and community shops and pubs. That's why the Highgate Society Sustainable Living group have decided to organise an event called "Use your money for good… …and get a good return" on Wednesday 21 March at the Highgate Society, 10a South Grove at 7.00 pm.

We're delighted to welcome speakers from the leading sustainable bank, Triodos and from positive investing company Ethex. We'll also have a speaker from Friends of the Earth who will talk about the Divestment movement - how to reduce your holdings of unethical companies from your pension and other funds. Talks from each speaker will be followed by a panel discussion and Q & A. Drinks and nibbles served too! Book your free place here now.

"London's Housing Crisis"

Continuing the Society’s series of talks on "Homes and Housing”, on the 22nd March there will be a debate at 6.30pm on “London's Housing Crisis”.

The speakers will be:
Sian Berry - Stood as candidate for London Mayor in 2008 and  2016, Green Party Camden Councillor for Highgate Ward, Greater London Assembly Member. Chair of Assembly Housing Committee. She will address the GLA’s response to dealing with the housing crisis and outline innovative solutions to housing such as community led developments.

Helen Marcus  -  Long-standing member of the London Forum Executive Committee and equally long-standing editor of its newsletter, committee member, chairman and vice president for 20 years of Heath and Hampstead Society and a retired professional opera singer. The London Forum, has looked into the reality of the "housing crisis" and considers that the government's approach is gravely flawed.
