Latest MBB-FBI storylines:
+ Embattled Arizona HC Miller didn't coach his squad again yesterday at practice, but he did meet with university brass & there's an expectation of a decision "sooner rather than later." However, Yahoo's Forde with an interesting shot at ESPN, "There was nothing in the documents we reviewed that implicated Sean Miller." (linklink)
+ Christian Dawkins' attorney in an email to other defendant lawyers & government players, "As you may have seen, Yahoo Sports this morning not only reported, but literally disseminated the contents of discovery, obtained by an unknown source, which was subject to the terms of the Protective Orders ...I would suggest a conversation to discuss what actions your office intends on taking with respect to investigating the source of not 'the leak,' but the individual(s), who are providing written discovery to third party media sources, with a rather transparent intent on discrediting the defendants associated with this case." (link)
+ San Diego State student-athlete Pope cleared, went for 12 & 6 in a win over Boise State last night. (link)
+ I did a poor job yesterday pulling a key quote from Pac-12 Commish Scott in a piece from Yahoo's Forde. Scott: "There is no question that the scope of the most recent allegations of wrongdoing have brought us to a tipping point. All of us share responsibility for finding solutions to problems many have known about but have been unwilling or unable to address." (link)
+ Nebraska AD Moos does not think the Huskers will be implicated, but does add, "How’s it going to affect college basketball on the men’s side? It’s going to be devastating. We may know a couple of things. It may have an affect in the next one, two, maybe three weeks. But in the next two or three weeks, there are going to be some things revealed that I think are going to be astonishing." (link)
+ Kentucky HC Calipari: "I say that we need to work with the [NBA] Players Association who oversee the agents and figure out what do they think the solution is. I think baseball and hockey is a little different than what we deal with, but these kids deserve advisors because they’re moving through this process. But, the way it’s done now, it’s an issue. [...] I come back to, the Players Association should loan these kids money. Let them take a loan. Let their family get a loan from the Players Association. What’s the problem? […] The problem with the NCAA, it’s slow moving. This one doesn’t need to be slow moving." (link)
+ Florida State HC Hamilton: "When you think about it, there are 15-20 one-and-done guys a year. Think if they were off the table and they knew they were going. You probably eliminate a lot of this stress and pressure that appears to be happening around kids that would probably not be considering college anyway if they had the same opportunity that a golfer, a tennis player, a baseball player, or a musician, or an actor, or someone who had a unique skill. They could go on and realize their dreams. In college basketball, you’re restricted because there’s a group of people who say that you can’t go." (link)
+ NBPA Executive Director Roberts: "What’s disturbed me about what’s happened recently is (that) I don’t think it’s fair to plaster the name of a player who when he was 18 years old allegedly received some monies from an agent or an agent representative because, No. 1, the problem is not the player. …The problem is the fact that these players would be even vulnerable to those sorts of gestures. Again, I can’t change the NCAA’s rules, but I can’t help but wonder why it is that an industry – and by “industry” I know I’m using quotes (and) I should be – why a process that produces millions, if not billions of dollars, thinks that the culprit is the kid who makes no money, who helps generate that income, who takes something. What disturbs me is the focus on the players, rather than better focus on the system." More. (link)
+ ESPN's Bilas: "A real contradiction for the NCAA: they say they believe in education, but endeavor to push the best players away from higher education altogether. Did Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, or Mike Conley suffer due to one year of college? Did Texas, UCLA or Ohio State? NCAA should encourage players to attend college, even if for a year. They are more likely to return and finish, and it is a positive relationship. Look what Durant, Love and Conley (and so many others) have done for their schools. We need to knock off the elitist attitude." (link, link)
+ ESPN's Williams encourages student-athletes to not just boycott to create change, but to boycott at the Final Four. (link)
+ NBA star James: "I don't know all the rules and regulations about it. But I do know what 5-star athletes bring to a campus, both in basketball and football. I know how much these college coaches get paid. I know how much these colleges are gaining off these kids. ... I've always heard the narrative they get a free education. But you guys aren't bringing me on campus to get an education. You guys are bringing me on it to help you get to a Final Four or to a national championship." (link)
+ More from TNT's Players Only as Chris Webber, Isiah Thomas, Amar'e Stoudemire & Baron Davis go tough on the NCAA. (link)
Louisville Interim AD Tyra & Prez Postel touch on key issues facing athletics & the university on a local radio segment. Tyra says he spoke with Notre Dame peer Swarbrick at ACC meetings recently & the pair noted the majority of both fanbases want to move on from recent NCAA decisions. Tyra points to current department concerns of tax reforms, facilities, attendance & student engagement as he's also working on adding more staffers to his academic team. Of note from Postel is some insight on MBB HC contract clauses connected to violations & NCAA investigations. (link)
Pittsburgh AD Lyke on her review of MBB HC Stallings & his program, "We’re in the midst of continuing to evaluate. There are so many aspects to evaluating a coach. It’s not just about performance on the court. There are many other elements to it. We continue to evaluate that and I’ll make that decision shortly." Further, Lyke says having not hired Stallings doesn't enter into the equation, "That does not matter. I didn’t hire a lot of the coaches I get a chance to work with and have the privilege to work with every day." Also indicates it would not be "supportive" or "productive" to publicly evaluate the program. Other topics covered in Lyke's interview include her continuing conversations with Penn State about a FB series. (link, link)
Oregon State boss Barnes held a town hall-type event last weekend, opened by voicing that a greater financial investment in FB was needed for the Beavers. OSU currently spends 19-20% of its overall budget on the gridiron while most others around the Pac-12 are at 29-30%. When adding in debt service, game operations, marketing & equipment the percentage rises to 30, but it's still not where Barnes wants to be. Barnes also pointed to some improvement in Annual Fund monies, but "we're certainly not where we need to be in terms of overall dollars. And then membership is very low." (link)
"From The Desk" of Arkansas AD Yurachek: "My travels around the state have also given me an opportunity to share what I believe are the core elements of a successful intercollegiate athletics program." 1) Our Vision: To be the best; 2) Out Mission: Building Razorbacks (champions) for LIFE; 3) Our Purpose: To create OPPORTUNITIES for our student-athletes to have SUCCESS; ACADEMICALLY, ATHLETICALLY and in their PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; 4) Our focus: Student-Athlete success; 5) Our Guiding Principles: Educate, invest, engage, develop, commitment, financial stability & unity. More. (link)
UCF AD White announces a revamp & rebrand of his Fan Development unit as "Brand Advancement" is the new header. Assoc. AD Skiles will continue to lead the overall department that now breaks down into teams of Content ("aspires to be an industry-leading in-house agency for all creative content to be used both internally and externally for UCF Athletics"), Experiential Innovation ("charged with implementing the most unique game-day experience in the country, while staying aligned with the Knights' brand message") & Discovery ("will utilize technology and data to help effectively make decisions in the areas of communications, marketing and sales"). White: "Our athletics department strives to do things a bit differently, and we are intentional about constantly generating and cultivating new ideas. […] This is one example of how UCF Athletics is continually evolving and working toward our goal of becoming a Top 25 intercollegiate athletics department." (link)
AthleticDirectorU's latest Experts' Roundtable included a trio of leading social/digital leaders in Temple Asst. AD for Digital Media Seigfried, Baylor Assoc. AD for Branding & Creative Services Lentz & Wisconsin Social Media Manager Harrison. Key takeaways: Seigfried, "I’m all for experimenting. Sometimes vertical video works. Obviously on Instagram stories it’s incredible. Sometimes on Twitter it can be super cool. I don’t think you should just start shooting/resizing everything to vertical, but I do think the days when we mocked it are long gone." Lentz points to live video an an underutilized component of the three major platforms, "Live video gets six times as many interactions as regular videos on Facebook. There’s a rawness and authenticity to it that otherwise can’t be conveyed." Harrison: "One way we are planning to adjust on Facebook is by becoming more active in responding to fans and commenting on our own posts, which in turn will help cultivate more conversation and engagement for our posts." Lots more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Squads participating in the MBB NIT this year will experience some FIBA-type rules as the three-point line will be moved back, four 10-minute quarters will be played & the lane will be widened to 16-feet. Specifically from the NCAA, "The experimental rules will help determine if a marginally more difficult three-point shot will be effective for men’s college basketball, and if widening the lane will reduce physicality and create more driving opportunities. In addition, the number of possessions and any impact on the pace and flow of the game will be evaluated." SVP of Basketball Gavitt says the experimentation is in an effort to "keep the playing rules contemporary and trending favorably." (link)

A new Baseball stadium is in the works for Wisconsin-Milwaukee as the Panthers will be a part of the Ballpark Commons project to feature a 4,000-seat venue that will also be home to a new independent club. Construction progress is already being made with an expectation of playing in the new digs next season. Panthers HC Doffek says the facility situation for his program has been a challenge & this type of leap forward should be a major positive for recruiting efforts. (link); No decision yet on a new indoor facility for Florida State FB as options are still being thoroughly reviewed. Noles Deputy AD for External Operations Hicks: "Nothing has been decided, contrary to what has been written." (link)
Central Michigan AD Alford tabs CarrSports Consulting's Peterson to serve as Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations in Mt. Pleasant with oversight of the financial piece, human resources, facilities, event management & the equipment room. Sport oversight: Men's & Women's Track & Field, as well as Cross Country. Peterson's path through the business has also included stops at UMass, South Dakota State & Fresno State. (link)
Here are a number of excerpts from a letter written by then-New Mexico FB student-athlete Boatright to former Interim AD Ruggiero & Interim Prez Abdallah detailing alleged mistreatment at the hands of on-leave HC Davie. "Now, I am not reaching out to you guys, just to make it seem like I am ‘tattle telling’ on (Davie). The main reason I am reaching out to you guys is due to how he speaks to his players and his coaching staff. […] I can’t tell you the number of times he has told players to ‘Shut the f*** [sic] up’ or has even grabbed players. I believe that someone needs to be at our practices the ENTIRE [sic] time. [...] I understand that arguments happen and coaches get heated and go off every so often. That’s just football. However, Davie takes it to a whole other level and becomes highly disrespectful. It doesn’t matter if it’s a player, another coach, or a trainer. There’s been so many altercations that I have witnessed since being here that it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all." Lots more. (link)
U.S. District Court Judge Andrews rules former Delaware Volleyball HC Kenny & AHC Gregory sufficiently demonstrated discrimination by age, sexual orientation & martial status in connection to their dismissal back in December of 2016. With Andrews' decision, the case moves on to the discovery phase, which could take six to eight months. No comment from the university as Blue Hens AD Rawak is named in the suit. This DelawareOnline article runs through historical on-court performance by Kenny's squad & allegations by former student-athletes that she "operated on a platform a fear." (link)
The Chicago Tribune's Greenstein dives into Loyola (Chicago) MBB's profile for NCAA Tournament at-large candidacy, lines up a bunch of numbers & commentary from key selection artists & concludes the process is a sham if the Ramblers don't get in without winning the MVC tourney this week. Ramblers HC Moser: "They want to kill you for scheduling, but they don’t penalize the high majors for not scheduling." (link); The IndyStar's Doyel takes major exception with Big Ten Commish Delany playing this year's MBB post-season event in NYC & still positioning for other eastern seaboard cities in the future in what he sees as a pure money grab. (link)
More Personnel: Miami (FL) AD James goes with George Washington Women's Soccer HC Barnes to fill the same role in Coral Gables. (link); Wisconsin-Stevens Point Volleyball HC Sutherland will assume the same position at Wisconsin-Green Bay. (link); Stanford FB Sports Performance Coach Jirgl made a surprise appearance on this season of ABC's The Bachelor. (link)
Tennessee AD Fulmer might be topping Nebraska's Moos in with the most headlines, talks about getting to know the department's staff and went on the Paul Finebaum Show to say as much: "Internally right now we are in a good place. There are good people here and we are earning each other's trust. I think warmth is one of the things that we missed here for a long period of time, that meaning that I care about you and you care about us and me and we care about the student-athletes and the University as a whole. It may sound corny, but that's one of our pillars. Communication, trust, warmth and intensity about getting our job done — that's, to me, very, very important to compete in this league." Still determining where he wants to go with his executive staff and says the department had a "come-to-Jesus" meeting where he essentially said "If you don't want to be here, you don't need to be here, and if you're not going to load the wagon or push the wagon, you're not going to ride in the wagon. We're going to all work together to get this done, and I think we're in a good place. Now we've just got to make it happen." (link)
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch digs into the financial picture at Missouri, where the Tigers are operating in the red in an effort to keep pace with league rivals. AD Sterk was "concerned" about the numbers when he took the job two years ago and says now that the concern "didn't go away." While revenue continues to increase, so do expenses. Sterk: "You build revenues, and we’ve been able to do that some, but not at the rate to get rid of (the deficit). We’ve got to do some things differently, and what they are I’m not sure yet. We have opportunity, but we have to manage our budgets a little more carefully right now." Ticket sales in 2017 are part of the picture as that revenue dropped to $17.9M, the lowest figure since 2007, and a donor base of 7,900 falls short of the 12K SEC average. Expenses have doubled since Mizzou's last year in the Big 12, including salaries increasing from $18.8M to $41.9M. (link)
Michigan State FB HC Dantonio: "I want to commit to be a part of the solution. I made my statement on how I feel about things, but hopefully we're healing as a community and healing as a university, and it's a step-by-step process. A lot of time, spring's a time for new beginnings, so I'll use that in this case as well. It's an opportunity to grow and to get better at everything that we're doing and looking at. I think [interim prez] John Engler has done a great job thus far, organizationally, in terms of, I guess, confronting the issue." On the departure of former AD Hollis: "He was kind of stuck in a bad place. Personally, I liked him as an AD. Obviously, I feel like it was kind of a decision that obviously we can't make. It was unfortunate but I wish him all the best." Dantonio's advice to his current squad: "Be respectful of the process. Make sure that we respect women, obviously. Make sure that we have no incidents, and that we have to be very careful everywhere we go, and understand that this is a process. They know the expectations here. They know the guidelines and the rules, and we're going to follow those and stay within those." (link)
The Clarion Ledger questions Mississippi State's handling of the resignation of former Baseball HC Cannizaro, as AD Cohen remains mum on the topic and no presser was held. The CL's Sammon wants to hear Cohen's responses to a list of questions, including why Cannizaro resigned, what the financial settlement will be, when and how Cohen learned of Cannizaro's admittedly "poor decisions" and did any similar indiscretions surface in a background check. (link)
UT Arlington gets a seven-year deal done with Under Armour to outfit all Mavericks programs with the help of Learfield. Mavs AD Baker: "This relationship presents a great opportunity to expand the resources available for each of our teams. It also provides dynamic, high quality apparel, footwear and equipment that emphasize our commitment to student-athlete competitive success." (link)
Also Noticed: Teamworks expands its partnership with the ACC, now league-wide, the first such pact in the 'Power 5.' (link); ESPN added 49K linear subscribers over the last month, ESPN2 lost 2K & ESPNU added 12K. FS1 down 46K, FS2 down 474K. NBC Sports Network up 646K. (link); Looks like the Winter Olympics averaged 19.8M viewers, down a touch from Sochi & Turin. (link); Papa John's ends its deal at the league-level with the NFL. (link); No decision on PASPA yet from SCOTUS...next possible date: March 5. (link); Interesting read from @TVGrimReaper on CBS' new streaming sports play being all about retransmission leverage, not a standalone business. (link); Oil prices, while down a bit yesterday, are back above $60, a good sign for a number of departments out there. (link)
More from Warren Buffett, this from his chat on CNBC on Monday, where he said money isn't the key to happiness... easy for a guy worth $91.1B to say. Buffett: "I wasn't unhappy when I had $10,000 when I got out of school. I was having a lot of fun." Further, "You will not be way happier if you double your net worth. ... you can have a lot of fun while you're getting rich." Cautions people to not constantly compare your financial situation to someone wealthier. "The truth is, I have got a lot of wealth, little pieces of paper [that say] Berkshire Hathaway on it. They are claim checks on all kinds of goods and services in the world. They can buy anything. I can buy 400-foot yachts and have 20 homes and all that. I wouldn't be happier." (link)
