MC Career Center: It's Hiring Season!

Student talking to employerEmployers are looking for strong candidates to fill open entry-level positions for May graduates. Graduate and fellowship program deadlines are fast approaching, too. How can students prepare?

This is the time to get application materials ready, update LinkedIn, brush-up on networking skills and attend career events to engage in the job search. This can be a very busy time for a Maryville College senior who is focused on taking comprehensive exams and putting final touches on his or her Senior Study. The Maryville College Career Center encourages students to make time for the job search, too.

One way to engage is to attend a local career fair. Career fairs provide an opportunity to meet hiring managers and learn about companies and graduate programs in a student’s area of interest. Here’s a list of upcoming local fairs that students cannot miss!

  • Annual Knox County Schools Recruitment Fair on Sat., March 3: Register here.
  • The University of Tennessee’s “Education Job Fair” on Wed., March 7 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park near downtown Knoxville. Learn more on Handshake.
  • Nonprofit Fair, hosted by MC’s Nonprofit Leadership Alliance on Thurs., March 8 from noon until 3 p.m. in the Alumni Gym. Read the press release.
  • Blount County Chamber’s “Blount County Job Fair” on Thurs., March 22 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Second Harvest Food Bank. Learn more here.
(Information about the career fairs listed above can be found on Handshake!)

Encourage your student to be prepared when he/she attends a career networking event or a formal career fair. Here are some tips:
  • Dress for success. Students should have a simple black suit to wear to interviews and events. An appropriate dress guide can be found on Handshake.
  • Students should print multiple copies of his/her resume or bring business cards printed with name, email and phone number.
  • Job seekers should stay in touch through LinkedIn or by writing a short email showing gratitude for the connection.

Student Affairs: Spring Break Residence Hall Closures

Beeson VillageResidence halls close for Spring Break on Fri., March 16 at 9 p.m. Residents found in their residence halls after the posted deadlines may be charged with an improper check-out fee or face disciplinary action(s). Residents’ ID cards are turned off during breaks to limit access to the halls during those times. Students are NOT expected to turn in their key during this break.

Residents may request to stay during Spring Break by submitting a Break Stay Request form through the Residence Life webpage. Requests must be submitted no later than March 2 at noon – late requests may incur a $50 processing charge. Depending on the rationale provided by the student, the request may be either permitted or denied – submitting a request does not guarantee a student will be allowed to stay during a break. Students, if allowed to stay during a break, may also incur a $15/day charge for this stay, which will be added to the student’s bill. During breaks, through the process of submitting a break request form, students agree to the break policies: no alcohol allowed in the residence halls (regardless of age); no visitors in the residence halls (who are not also approved to be present during the break); and any violations of break, College or residence hall policies may cause the student to be removed from break housing immediately.

  2. Meeting with their academic advisor: discussing interests, goals and degree requirements that can/should be completed abroad.
  3. Talking to the financial aid office about what additional aid is available for study abroad. Scholarships for Study Abroad can be found here.

Tartan Tuesday graphic

Advancement: Tartan Tuesday 2018

Be one of 600 donors who'll help us reach our Tartan Tuesday goal! MC’s third annual Tartan Tuesday is scheduled for April 3, between midnight and 11:59 p.m. (EDT). For 24 hours, MC alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends will come together to give back and invest in the success of the Maryville Fund, the College’s highest annual giving priority. If 600 donors make a gift before midnight on April 3, we'll receive a matching gift from an anonymous group of donors. For more information, please contact Meghan Fagg '10.

Business Office: Form 1098-T

Maryville College has partnered with Heartland ECSI to provide 1098-Ts for tax purposes.

- To access an electronic copy of your 1098-T statement, please visit this website. You will need the following information:

  • School name – Maryville College
  • First name, last name and social security number of the student
  • Mailing zip code that is on file at Maryville College

- Students who consented to receive their 1098-T electronically have received an email notifying them that their statement is ready for viewing.

- Students who did not consent to receive their 1098-T electronically have received a paper copy in the mail.

- The Business Office provides a “Frequently Asked Questions” section on the website to assist you with this form. We will be the first to admit that the Form 1098-T is confusing because of the timing of the tuition/fee charges and the corresponding financial aid. You may automatically assume that this form is wrong, but we assure you that it is correct. The vast majority of higher education institutions use this same billing process (i.e., billings for fall semester in July, fall financial aid credited in September; billings for spring semester in December, spring financial aid credited in February), so we are not alone. A color-coded chart found on our FAQ page helps illustrate the process (#04: “Why is Box 7 checked?”)

Questions regarding the 1098-T? Please visit the ECSI website or call 866-428-1098.

*Please be advised that Maryville College cannot provide legal, tax or accounting advice to students or parents. We urge you to check with your tax advisor about this and other tax-related documents.
