Kneemail from Saint James Church

February 28, AD 2018

FROM THE RECTOR:
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St James’,

In my annual parish meeting remarks at the end of January, I spoke of our stewardship of time and talent as an area of concern.  I have noticed a softening of our dedication in this area, and a tiredness in those who already serve.  Recall that God gives each member of the church time and talents, not so you can bury them, or hoard them, but so that you can spend them on others, especially those of the household of faith.

The Prayer Book Catechism has this to say:
Q.       Who are the ministers of the Church?
A.       The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons.
[BCP, p. 855]
Note the order—laypersons then clergy.  The laity are the primary ministers of the church.

Q.       Through whom does the Church carry out its mission?
A.       The church carries out its mission through the ministry of all its members.
[BCP, p. 854]

Now on one level, we are all ministers because it is necessary for the proper functioning of the Church.  If there is to be a Sunday School, for instance, there must be people who teach.  If the church is to be properly ordered for worship, there must be a Choir, an Altar Guild, and so on.  St James’ is not a Wal-Mart of religion, but a parish family in which every member of the family must do his or her part.

So, one of the things we must do this year is pay attention to our stewardship of time and talent with the same concern that we take care of our stewardship of treasure.  The goal is to reinvigorate our mission and ministry.  Accordingly, and just to give you a heads-up, in Eastertide, we will have a specific stewardship campaign for time and talent.  This is something you might begin thinking and praying about.

Yours with every blessing,

Rev. Douglas Anderson, Rector

A WORD ABOUT PANHANDLERS.  Being a downtown church, from time to time, panhandlers may approach you after Mass, looking for money.  In such a case, it is best that you refer them to the clergy.  We have the ability to respond to their needs in an appropriate way, and oftentimes can identify those whom we have already helped.  St James’ gives generously to those in need in our community, but it is best that we do this in a systematic way.
