Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the LORD your God, am with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)
I sometimes wonder if the plethora of Bible translations available today is really worth it. In the face of so many options, I find myself returning more often than not to the tried-and-true King James Version, written more than five hundred years ago!

Recently, however, a particular choice of words from the Good News Translation of the first chapter of the book of Joshua gripped my imagination. Throughout the opening chapter, and in most translations of Joshua 1, we read of God repeatedly commanding Joshua to be “strong” and “courageous”. Fair enough. Joshua did need to be strong and courageous for the times – and the leadership position – in which he found himself. But the Good News Bible translates those two words in a slightly different way, using “determined” for strong, and “confident” for courageous. And, let me tell you, those slightly different renderings make a world of difference to me.

You see, I don’t always feel “strong” or “courageous”. Those are words perhaps best reserved for action heroes than mere mortals. But I can be determined. Very determined. I suppose I should be thankful to the Dutch forebears on my father’s side for that.
“Stubborn Dutchman” was something I heard often growing up, used in reference to my grandfather and father both. Not that it was bandied about in a complimentary fashion very often. Another word – given the context – might have been “pig-headed”.

But let me tell you… being pig-headed, or a stubborn Dutchman, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, God has used all kinds of people to achieve his ends – tax collectors, prostitutes, liars, adulterers, politicians, soldiers and poets to name a few. I daresay he might even have used me at times, and I am sure he can use you, too!
Frank Capra, the Academy award-winning director once said, “Friend, you are a divine mingle-mangle of guts and stardust. So hang in there! If doors opened for me, they can open for anyone.”

Thirty years ago, I founded Messenger Films (with a gift from my mother to cover the costs of incorporation) because I believed that God wanted me to make films declaring his glory to the world. I have been tempted many times along the way to give up, but something keeps pushing me onward. I haven’t always been strong and courageous, but through God’s grace, I have been determined more often than not, which has inspired me to be confident – a winning combination for entering the Promised Land. I hope you will spend time this week reading the Bible – any translation you choose – and consider how the Word of God might inspire you.
