The newly formed

Union Bay Watershed Protection Society

is holding its first public meeting.

The quality of Union Bay's drinking water is being threatened by a proposal by Island Timberlands to log a mature stand of trees close to the shore of Langley Lake. Langley Lake is the water source for over 600 residences. The danger is that logging will increase turbidity in the water and consequently the need for much more expensive water treatment. The Union Bay Watershed Protection Society is working towards an injunction against any logging close to the Lake, and longer term protections for the whole watershed.

The meeting will share information about the Langley Lake watershed and about other communities’ efforts to take control over their watersheds. It will also make time for people to take part in one of the most effective actions - sending handwritten letters to local and provincial politicians. Participants will be provided with samples and time to write their own messages.

Site C: Is It a Done Deal?

March 23 7-9 pm K’omoks First Nation Band Hall

Ken Boon of the Peace Valley Landowners Association and Steve Gray of the Peace Valley Solidarity Initiative will give up-to-date information on the economic analysis of Site C, including the environmental and social costs of this mega-project.

They will also discuss the BC government’s disregard for the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People and the breaking of Treaty 8.

This event will be a fundraiser for the legal costs for West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations and the Peace Valley Landowners.

Support the First Nations and farmers who are trying to stop Site C dam. An opportunity to hear first-hand how this ill-fated project is impacting the people who live in this beautiful watershed as well as raise funds for the legal challenges.

Yellow Stake Campaign

For $100 (or more) you can buy a Stake in the Peace, a yellow stake with your name and city that will be planted on Ken Boon’s land. All funds raised go to the legal fund for the First Nations’ court challenges. You will receive a tax receipt. Cheques can be made payable to Nun Wa Dee Stewardship Society – Site C, 9824 98A Ave., Fort St. John, BC, V1J 1S2.

- SUPPORT BLUEBERRY RIVER FIRST NATIONS-

In 2015, Blueberry River First Nations (BRFN) commenced a significant treaty infringement claim against the Province of British Columbia. BRFN claims that the Province is in breach of its obligations under Treaty 8 due to the cumulative impacts of development in BRFN’s traditional territory. The trial begins in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver on March 26, 2018.
