Dr. Tom Noseworthy appointed as BC AHSN President & CEO
The Board of the British Columbia Academic Health Science Network (BC AHSN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas W. Noseworthy, CM, MD, MSc, MPH, F.R.C.P.C., F.A.C.P., FCAHS, as President & CEO effective June 1, 2018.
Dr. Noseworthy comes to BC AHSN from Alberta, where he has been a key leader in the establishment and development of Alberta’s Strategic Clinical Networks – clinical innovation engines that drive improvement in patient outcomes, experience, improved access to health care, and system sustainability. From 2012-2015, Dr. Noseworthy served as Associate Chief Medical Officer for Strategic Clinical Networks, and has held interim roles as Edmonton Zone Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer, North Sector.
A critical care physician and graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Noseworthy is a professor and the former head of the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, and former professor and chair of Public Health Sciences, University of Alberta.
Dr. Noseworthy is highly-recognized for his numerous contributions to the field. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2007, has been named one of the "100 Physicians of the Century" in Alberta, and is a recipient of the Alberta Centennial Award. He received the Leadership Award while he was at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, where he was the CEO and President.
An international executive search led to Dr. Noseworthy's appointment as BC AHSN’s inaugural President & CEO. BC AHSN is a new, multi-stakeholder provincial organization created to drive meaningful system change on priority health issues that no single organization or sector can solve on its own. A strong and engaged board has guided the early development of the network.
In his new role, Dr. Noseworthy will be tasked with leading BC AHSN's further strategic and operational development, and building a high-performing organization that can connect and catalyze British Columbia’s resources and expertise for health system change.

The role of the British Columbia Academic Health Science Network (BC AHSN) is to connect and catalyze BC's collective expertise and resources to deliver high impact innovations into our health system for the benefit of our province and its people. The network engages a variety of stakeholders, including organizations across BC's health care, research, and health professional education sectors; patients/families; and industry.
The BC AHSN organization integrates a number of key provincial resources. Currently, this includes:
- BC SUPPORT Unit - Advancing patient-oriented research & trials in BC (part of Canada's Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR))
- Clinical Trials BC - Strengthening BC's capacity/competitiveness for attracting world class clinical trials
Other resources are currently under development. This includes:
- Initiative advancement/implementation – Developing a platform for driving priority health system change initiatives
- Supporting development of/access to/use of health data – Further building on data initiatives led by the BC SUPPORT Unit and the BC Ministry of Health
