Snow, storms and a few more stars

Well, we hope you're all managing to stay warm as Britain battles the Beast from the East this week! It's supposed to get worse in Gloucestershire at the end of the week, so wrap up warm and if it does snow badly, stay safe.

February was another busy month as we have been meeting with new prospects across a wide range of sectors, which is really encouraging. Many of our clients have come on board thanks to a push on business development and word of mouth, so it's great that more and more people are hearing about us because others are talking about us. More news on this next month!

We attended a number of networking events last month - it's always great to go out and meet new people. We've also booked up a GDPR session for one of our clients. The date of the new regulation coming into force is fast approaching, so if you're still unsure what to do, read on for more information to make sure you're compliant when it does.
GDPR launch is written in the stars

Over the last few months, we've mentioned GDPR a few times in our newsletters and no doubt you've seen it in the news too. On 25 May 2018, GDPR - General Data Protection Regulation - will come into force and applies to all businesses. The regulation aims to secure individuals’ rights in respect of all personal data held about them, such as employee records, invoices, diary entries, patient records, recruitment records and customer lists.

In short, personal data includes anything that identifies an individual including their name, address, medical or banking details, place of birth, contact numbers, gender or marital status. Sensitive data or special category data includes, for example, genetic information, biometrics, health, ethnic origin and criminal activity.

To ensure you are GDPR compliant, it is important you plan ahead. Below are just some of the points to consider:
  • carry out an audit on all personal data held, where/how it is held and who you share it with
  • decide how long you need to retain personal data to be able to provide the services you offer
  • show how you are GDPR compliant with documented data protection activity
  • provide information to employees and job applicants on the purpose of collecting their personal data and their rights
  • have a process in place for notifying the data protection authority of any data breach
  • consider accountability and potential need for a Data Protection Officer
  • ensure you have a compliant contract in place with anyone who processes data on your behalf
GDPR is daunting for most businesses who still have many questions and don’t know where to start. There are many companies offering their services to get you through GDPR effectively. If you are stuck and could do with a head start, ask us about our factsheet today at hello@hr-star.co.uk
Getting to know your stars

Working alongside people is one thing, but understanding them and how they tick is another thing altogether. To help teams improve their communication, we offer 'personality profiling' and run workshops around this and what it means.

We use a model called DiSC; a tool which enables us to become more self-aware of our own personality traits, thereby enabling us to understand how different people respond to certain scenarios and how we can more effectively communicate with our colleagues.

More specifically, DiSC profiles help to:
  • Increase your self-knowledge; how you respond to conflict, what motivates you, what causes you stress and how you solve problems
  • Improve working relationships by recognising the communication needs of team members
  • Facilitate better teamwork
  • Manage more effectively by understanding the motivations and priorities of employees and team members
  • Become more self-knowledgeable, well-rounded and effective leaders
We recently ran one of our DiSC workshops with our client, GemSec.

Phil Edmonds, Managing Director, said: "Having a business with five directors and shareholders from different families with different needs has caused many problems over recent years. Two weeks ago we invested in a DiSC workshop by HR Star which really opened our eyes to understanding each other better. There is still work to do but we have found DiSC to be an excellent tool to help us to run the business much more effectively."
