When Canadians exercise their right to access records of what their service providers know about them, companies are compelled by law to provide it. But our latest report shows that many citizens still face barriers to getting reasonable access to their personal information -- even when the information that companies keep on file catalogues some of their most private moments.

According to a report by the New York Times, the Mexican government has yet to make any substantial progress in its investigation into the spyware story that continues to rock the country. The government has also made erroneous claims that they've engaged in on-going discussions with Citizen Lab staff. “That’s a surprising statement, given that we have had exactly one meeting with them and have received no further follow-up,” says senior researcher John Scott-Railton.

Global News profiled work undertaken by Citizen Lab researchers on Bill C-59, the federal government's proposed national security legislation. The analysis finds that, while there are some positive aspects of the bill, there are many more troubling passages that have critical implications for human rights, political transparency, and global security.

Hosted by the Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa, Parsons will take part in a panel that will investigate Canadian defence and cyber policy.
