Happy March,
booklovers!

If the weather is any indication, spring has arrived. As we’re in the season of new beginnings, why not pick up a book about how to make a new you? The 5-minute series (5-minute Calm, 5-minute Yoga) is a great start for picking up helpful tips on renewing your mindset and your life!

Events You Don't Want to Miss

1. Activity Time with Little Artist Collective

Local art pop-up The Little Artist Collective will be joining us for story time at Orange Spot again this month on March 4 at 12:00 p.m. This month, we’re reading The Blobfish Book! This is a delightful TRUE story about all the things you never knew about the blobfish — one of the treasures of the ocean (at least, according to Blobfish). A modest $5 for paint supplies is requested for attendees.

2. St. Patrick’s Day @ The Brew Cellar

One of the biggest block parties of the year, North Charleston’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration is a massively fun time. This year, it coincides with our monthly pop-up at The Brew Cellar, so you can stop by the bookmobile while you’re partaking in the revelry. Keep an eye out for green-covered specials!

3. Mellow Mushroom Block Party
A new event series is ahead of us this March. Every Thursday from March 15* until April 5 will find us at the Mellow Mushroom at Tanger, where there will be a local vendors’ market with live music and other fun activities. Hop over to join the party from 5 to 9 p.m. each night.

*Fun Fact! Did you know that March 15 is also called "the ides of March?" It is! Observed as a high holy holiday in Roman times, the date became infamous as the reported date of Julius Caesars' murder. It was further immortalized in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, when a Soothsayer tells him to "beware the ides of march" just days before his eventual death.

Save the Date: Independent Bookstore Day

As we look ahead to April, we want to flag your attention for the final Saturday of the month: Independent Bookstore Day.

This is a day to celebrate bookstores and all the wonderful programs, events, and books they introduce into our lives. It’s also (conveniently) Viola’s birthday! We have a full day of programming in the works, filled with literary prizes and bookish treats.

There may even be cupcakes involved … So mark your calendars now — April 28th is the date at the bookmobile you really don’t want to miss.

About the book
In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women’s lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

A wife refuses her husband’s entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store’s prom dresses. One woman’s surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella “Especially Heinous,” Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgängers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes.

Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.
