A TIME FOR NEW GROWTH
Green, green everywhere! So many of our local plants that normally stick around throughout the Winter died in the freezes this year, zapping more color than usual from our local landscape. But, practically overnight (and quite early), Spring weather has arrived, calling the Green forth to fill in the spaces of that which has perished.
March is another big month, with the Spring Equinox and two Full Moons (the 2nd time this year and the last until 2020!)
Spring is a time of deep transitions. New life sprouts up from below and pulses into existence. Our energy becomes more outward, bringing forth that which we dreamed of during our Winter slumber. During the Equinox, day and night are equal, and after, the daytime continues to grow throughout the season. In New Orleans, Spring is an especially social and communal time in which to reconnect and dance (and resist!)
This year more than ever, we are aware that certain things we may have taken for granted are not guaranteed, like the plants that did not survive the freeze. Like Nature, our human efforts also shift and die and break down, but new life and new ways always spring forth from the remains. Seeds we may have scattered and forgotten unexpectedly pop up and demonstrate the tenacity, fertility and uncontrollability of Life.
This Spring, what will you focus on growing? How are you giving birth to what you conceived during the dark months? How are you creating new ways of being in the compost of the old?
There is so much growing locally right now! Plantain and Dock abound, Orange Blossom sweetens the air and Peach just passed. Dandelions brighten our way, the first of the Strawberries are popping out and Mulberries are almost here. Also look out for Henbit, Evening Primrose, Speedwell, Wild Geranium, and Mayhaw flowers (pictured below!) Enjoy the abundance!
FAREWELL, STEVIE RAY!
We are so honored that Stevie Ray has chosen to spend the last 5 1/2 years with Maypop, offering wise and intuitive suggestions and holding such powerful space. We are so excited for her in this next leg of her journey, as she leaves for a program of herbal study. We wish her the very best. Her last shifts are this week- on Wednesday and Thursday. Stop by to show her some love and send her off right!
Stevie Ray has left us with some parting words:
"My years at Maypop have taught me so much and this opportunity has been such a powerful blessing for my family! There are really no words to convey my feelings on leaving this special space. I would like to express gratitude to our community for the trust that many of you have placed in Maypop, for sharing your experiences and stories, and for assisting my growth as a medicine person & teacher. Thank you!"

NETTLED EGGS RECIPE
Celebrate Spring with this delicious recipe from Gather Victoria!
Ingredients:
~ 1/2 c. steamed and pureed nettle tops
~ 12 organic, farm-fresh eggs
~ 2 TBSP organic mayonnaise
~ 1 tsp lemon juice
~ 1 TBSP finally chopped "crow" (wild) garlic + some for garnish
~ 1 TBSP finely chopped cleaver tops
~ 1 TBSP finely chopped garlic mustard
~ Sea salt and pepper
~ Chive blossoms, dandelions, daisies, forget-me-nots, Rosemary blossoms or other edible flowers
Directions:
~ Boil the eggs in simmering water for 10 minutes. Drain them and cover with cold water.
~ Cut the eggs in half and pop out the yolks. In a medium bowl, mash the yolks with a fork.
~ Add the mayonnaise, lemon juice and cleavers. Mix thoroughly.
~ Start adding in the pureed nettles until you get the consistency you like. You can use a food processor for this if you're after a silky smooth filling.
~ Stir in the chopped garlic mustard and crow garlic and season with sea salt and ground pepper to taste.
~ Pipe the filling into the halves and decorate with colorful blossoms. Chive and Rosemary blossom add a particularly wonderful flavor!
