Athletic Director's Message

With the melting of snow and mild temperatures, spring sports are just around the corner! First day of practice for spring sports will be on Monday, March 12th.

If your student is trying out for a spring sport, they MUST pick up a Gold Card from the Athletic Office prior to the 1st day of practice, March 12th. If your athlete does not have a Gold Card, they will not be able to participate in practice or tryouts. A new Gold Card is given to the athlete for each season and each sport. Also, a current sports physical dated April 15, 2017 or later must be turned into the Athletic Office before a Gold Card can be issued.

This newsletter will explain a number of items that are directly related to the athletic department and spring sports.

2018 Spring Sports Practice/Tryout Schedule

Pioneer Gold Card

The East Grand Rapids Athletic Department instituted a "Gold Card" system last year to ensure that all athletes have the required information turned in to the Athletic Office before they can practice/tryout or participate in any competition.

Our coaches are instructed to only allow athletes who have completed this process to be able to participate. Athletes must turn in their "Gold Card" the first day of practice.

Athletes must have the following on file to receive a Gold Card:

  • Physical on file (dated April 15, 2017 or later)

  • Concussion Awareness form on file

  • Eligible to play (grades)

  • Participation fee paid (club sport fee will be paid to the club)

  • Current ImPact Test completed (test expires every two years)

Participation Fee

A fee of $250.00 per sport, per season is required for participation. These funds are necessary to operate the high school interscholastic athletic program. The interscholastic athletic program in the EGR Public Schools is an entirely voluntary program based on activities outside a student's regular academic school day. Credit is not granted for such activities; participation is not part of any academic course and is not required for progression from grade to grade. The athletic department programs are part of the schools' co-curricular activities and afford students the privilege of participation in competitive sports. Sport participation fees paid to EGR Athletics are as follows; Baseball, Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Track. Club Sports are paid directly to the Club treasurer. Club sports are as follows; Crew, Lacrosse, Softball and Water Polo. Checks payable to EGR Athletics can either be mailed or dropped off at the Athletic Office - 2211 Lake Drive SE. New this season, Participation Fees can now also be paid with a credit card. Please see below for additional information.

NEW!  Paying Participation Fee with a Credit Card

East Grand Rapids Public Schools is implementing the SchoolPay credit card processing system for school-related activities and fundraisers. In the coming weeks and months, you will begin to see the option to pay for many school and PTO/Boosters-related items with SchoolPay. This system is intended to provide a convenient, safe and secure option of paying by credit card in exchange for a small processing fee. SchoolPay charges parents 3% of the total cost of items purchased plus 30 cents per item. Paying by check will also continue to be an option. Read More...

Physicals

All athletes must have completed and have on file in the Athletic Office a sport physical that is dated no earlier than April 15, 2017 for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Per MHSAA, sport physicals dated prior to April 15th will not be accepted. Forms are available in the Athletic Office or on our website:

https://www.mhsaa.com/portals/0/Documents/health%20safety/physical2page.pdf

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in athletics at East Grand Rapids High School a student must pass four (4) classes in their previous semester. Any student who is participating and has less than a 2.0 grade point will be required to attend at least one hour a week of tutorial sessions during the season they participate. Please contact the Athletic Office if you have any questions at (616) 235-7593.

Concussions

A state law in Michigan requires parents and students to be provided educational materials regarding concussions and the risk of students participating in athletics. A signed acknowledgement will be required to be on file in our offices. This information will be provided in the student handbook and also available on our website under "Forms". Most students have completed this during the 2016-17 school year either at the high school or middle school and have met this requirement. If your son and/or daughter attended East Grand Rapids last year, your information is on file with us. If you are new to the school district you will need to complete this form.

ImPact Baseline Testing

All students must have an ImPact Concession Baseline Test on file in order to get their Gold Card.
*All 9th & 11th graders and anyone that has not previously been tested, must take the Impact Test.
*10th & 12th graders do NOT need to take the test IF they had tested the previous year.
*The ImPact Test expires every two years.

The test will take approximately 30-40 minutes and will be held in the Computer Lab, 2nd floor, Room 231 on the following dates:

  • March 2nd, 5th, 7th & 9th

The above times will be the ONLY times offered prior to spring sports, please plan accordingly.

Athletic Team Boosters

The Athletic Team Boosters have provided over $2 million in supplies, uniforms and equipment to all of our athletic teams over the past 20 years. I would encourage you to join the Team Boosters and support this organization any way you can. The athletes that wear our block "E" on their uniforms are very fortunate to be supported by the Team Boosters. Your support is appreciated (see attached form) or click here for more information:  www.eastgrsports.com.

Barwis Methods Strength Training

In December of 2012, East Grand Rapids Schools became partners with Mike Barwis to provide strength training and conditioning to our students. In the past five years, our students have received instructions in a research based strength training model that is the finest available. The fitness room is open approximately 27 hours a week and all of our teams are taking advantage of a training model that is appropriate for high school aged men and women.

I have been extremely impressed by the staff of Barwis and the commitment our student athletes are making to their training. I have received a number of compliments from kids and parents about how fortunate we are to provide this program
.
