Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Dr Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere MNZM

2/12/1927 - 19/2/2018

It is with considerable sadness we acknowledge the passing of Dr Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere.  Dr Ngatoko Rahipere was a strong supporter of the College over the last 30 years.  He was instrumental in the development of the College Whare and Kaumatua to the Board of Trustees for over 20 years, providing cultural knowledge on Tauranga Moana tikanga and protocols.

In 2007 Dr Ngatoko Rahipere became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori and over many years has given exemplary service to his community of Tauranga Moana.

He gave selflessly of his time, skills and knowledge for the public good, and was passionate about the power of education to enable people to meet their aspirations and potential.  He was always available for the Board and I,  to provide advice, guidance and cultural support.

His huge contribution to education across Tauranga Moana and Aotearoa was recognised in 2015 with the University of Waikato bestowing on him an Honorary Doctorate.

It was a privilege for our boys from Te Whanau o Aronui to be involved in the Haka Powhiri at the Tangihanga  for Dr Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere.

Arts Assembly

Arts Captain -  Fletcher Oxford

What moves men of genius, or rather what inspires their work, is not new ideas, but their obsession with the idea that what has already been said is still not enough.

Good morning boys, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Fletcher and I have been given the honour of being your arts captain for 2018. Now, this role, along with every other leadership position, comes coupled with the responsibility to leave behind something bigger than a footprint. So I’ve made it my vow to inspire a change within this school and ensure that the culture of the arts here is truly recognised and admired by all, in a manner which will survive the many years to come post me leaving Tauranga Boys’ College. Throughout my years here, I’ve had the pleasure of watching the arts at TBC grow into the entity it is today, where it’s valued at a level that we’re all very proud of. The aim is to make sure that it never loses that momentum in future.

So with that, I’d just like to share a little about myself and my time at school. Upon arriving at TBC, I instantly found a family in the arts, a bunch of really talented and like minded people who just wanted to create. Since then I have been largely involved in music, drama, oratory, theatre sports, and every school production since year 9.  For the past 3 years I have been a member of the senior underwater hockey team, that recently won gold at Nationals in 2017. I endorsed level one and level two with Excellence while still being a year 11 student and completed my level 3 studies as a year 12. On that note, something I’d like to bring attention to, is just how much the art subjects here at TBC are truly academic subjects.

Last year as a year 12 I managed to gain a scholarship in drama, and am striving to do the same in design, photography and media studies. If you want to be successful here, which I hope is all of you, remember that the vast majority of my credits have come from those creative subjects. Follow your strengths and do what you love, and while you’ll be no stranger to effort and hard yards, you’ll never really work a day in your life. I encourage you all to try your hand at an element of the arts here at school, even if you think its not really your thing and especially if you’ve never tried it before.

There’s a chance you’ll find a passion you never knew was there and there’s a definite chance you’ll learn a little more about yourself.

There’s one particular piece of advice that I have to offer you all. And that’s never do something half heartedly. Be it in the classroom, on the sports field, or on the stage. Or even outside the walls of this school in your daily happenings. If you’re not aspiring to change something bigger than yourself then why not? If you’ve no aspiration to better yourself and go that one step further than the rest, ask yourself why it is you’d rather stand still.

This year I plan to resit my Drama Scholarship and strive for an outstanding. I’m also going to release an album of original music as well as perform on stage at the Globe Theatre in London. “No piece of art is ever completed; it is only ever abandoned.”

I’d like to thank you for your attention and give my final word as the following quote: “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if its good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. And while they are deciding... make even more art.”

Sport Congratulations

Volleyball - Super 8

Congratulations to our Senior A Volleyball Team who won the Super 8 Volleyball Tournament in Gisborne earlier this week. A report follows from Mr Ben Ormsby, coach Senior A.

The Tournament started on Monday with wins in Round 1 and Round 2 for the team. The Round 2 win was against a particularly good Napier Boys' team. The boys played really well and won 25-13, 25-9 and 25-10. Round 3 saw us play New Plymouth which we won 3-0. This put us in a semi-final against the hosts Gisborne Boys'. Gisborne pushed us right throughout the match but we ended up winning 3-1. The final was played against Napier Boys' who had won their semifinal against Hastings. Napier came out strong and pushed us hard with the game poised at 1 set all. We won the 3rd set comfortably but were in deep trouble in the 4th set, down 19-24. We managed to side out and then serve out the set and claim the Super 8 Volleyball title for 2018. Cameron O'dea was awarded the player of the day in the final. Sam Henderson (captain), Shi Jie Yong and Hoani Lawrence all made the tournament team. Congratulations on the effort of the team and individuals.

Golf - Super 8

This year’s competition was played in fine weather at Springfield Golf Club, Rotorua.

It became clear early on that the two main challengers for the 2018 title were going to be the two BOP schools; Tauranga Boys’ College and Rotorua Boys' High School. Scoring was outstanding (see below) but in the end it came down to a single shot, with the hosts Rotorua, winning on their home course. Hamilton Boys were 17 shots back in 3rd place.

The B Team, consisting of Oscar Brighouse, Dohyun Lee, Rhys Donaghy and Nik Donovan also had a couple of notable performances, with Dohyun scoring 2 rounds of 74 and Oscar shooting rounds of 78 and 77.

Tennis - Super 8

As hosts for the 2018 Super 8 Tournament, Tauranga Boys’ were fortunate enough to have two teams playing due to the late withdrawal of other schools. While they found results hard to come by, the 2nd team were always competitive and we look forward to seeing these players challenge their way into the 1st team in years to come.

Day one saw the Tauranga Boys’ 1st team play New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Although several of the matches were close, the final result was a resounding 6 - 0 win to Tauranga. Day two began with an impressive 4 - 2 victory against Napier Boys’ High School, giving Tauranga Boys’ top place in their pool.  In the semi final Tauranga met long time rivals Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Outstanding singles matches from Caelan Potts, Corban Crowther, Jackson Loomb and Lucas Darling gave the team an unassailable 4 – 0 lead meaning that the doubles were not required.

The final tie of the tournament was against Hamilton Boys’ High School. With the exception of Crowther, the singles didn’t go Tauranga’s way. Going in to the doubles 3 – 1 down meant splitting the regular combinations to try to win both matches well enough to win on count-back. To their credit the doubles combinations of Potts/Loomb and Crowther/Darling fought hard to win both matches and bring the final score to 3 – 3. Unfortunately Hamilton finished ahead on count-back to win the title for 2018. With the team still relatively young we look forward to bringing the shield back next year.

Teams:

TBC 1 – Caelan Potts, Corban Crowther, Jackson Loomb, Lucas Darling, Hamish Roberts.

TBC 2 – Carrigan Hartley, Jack Blow, Michael Chrisp, Nick Rea, Bosse Thiel.

Tauranga Boys' College  - Old Boys' Association

The Tauranga Boys’ College Old Boys’ Association began in 2008 when we celebrated our 50th Jubilee. Since that time we have developed an Old Boys' database to which is sent a newsletter every couple of months detailing what is going on at school as well as with our Old Boys scattered all around the globe.

Many of our students have family members who have previously attended Tauranga Boys' College and it would be great to have their details on our Database too. If you are an Old Boy or know Old Boys who are not on our database then please e-mail details to Rob Leslie on r.leslie@tbc.school.nz who is the Staff Representative on the Old Boys Committee.  If you are on Facebook the TBC Old Boys has a page there as well which you may find of interest.

These connections are of particular importance this year as we will celebrate our 60th Jubilee with a Weekend of celebrations at Labour Weekend (October 19th to 21st) so please pass on these details to all of your Old Boy mates.

Interim Reports

The first indication of how your son has settled this term will be available to you through an Interim Report.  These will be available from Friday 9th March.

These reports are being completed by teachers and will indicate how your son has settled into the academic year.  Where concerns are signalled I would invite you to contact the class teacher accordingly with an email to the teacher being the most suitable method to make contact.  An example staff email address is j.smith@tbc.school.nz

The reports will also provide detail of how you can monitor your son's progress through the Parent Portal.  This portal enables you to monitor academic progress, attendance, school fees and reports with details of how to access this in my last newsletter.
