Toronto Community Housing receives Visions of Science award

Toronto Community Housing received the Outstanding Community Achievement Award at the third annual Visions of Science’s Visionary Gala on March 9. Visions of Science Network for Learning Inc. is a non-profit organization that aims to educate and connect low-income and marginalized youth to the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program, which currently operates in 26 TCHC communities, was started by former TCHC tenant, Dr. Eugenia Duodu. Thank you to Eugenia and her team for all their work and support in inspiring the next generation of science leaders.

Building a new strategic plan

Toronto Community Housing’s process to develop a new strategic plan for 2019 to 2022 is underway. A series of town hall meetings will take place in April to receive feedback from tenants about the company’s strategic priorities. The next strategic plan will help Toronto Community Housing become more tenant-centric and more responsive to the needs of its tenants and communities.

TCHC recognized as one of Toronto’s 2018 Affordable Housing Champions

Mayor John Tory and Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão recognized Toronto Community Housing as one of Toronto’s 2018 Affordable Housing champions at the City’s Affordable Housing Committee meeting on March 2. The City award recognized 18 non-profit and private sector organizations that currently have rental and ownership affordable housing opportunities. TCHC is being recognized for helping to address the demand for affordable housing in Toronto, most recently with the development of new affordable rental units in Regent Park. Together, the 18 champions are delivering 1,094 affordable homes in 20 developments in 20 wards across the city. These homes will be ready for occupancy starting in 2018.

Investing in capital renewal at 410 McCowan Rd.

Toronto Community Housing recently hosted Mayor John Tory, Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão and Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker at 410 McCowan Road, where they viewed the major capital repair work underway in the community. At the February 26 media event, TCHC board member Colin Lynch thanked the City for supporting TCHC’s 2018 capital repair plan of $300 million—a record level of investment that is enabling the company to accelerate its efforts to repair its housing stock and improve living conditions for tenants.

Reporters and guests toured one of the 14 townhomes currently being refurbished with new cladding, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and ceilings. Similar repairs will begin on an additional 10 townhomes this summer. Tenants of the14 townhomes have been temporarily moved into other TCHC homes while the repairs are done and are scheduled to return before the end of the year.

Celebrating inspiring female tenants at TCHC

On March 8, International Women’s Day, we highlighted women who are making a positive difference in their communities. Many are leaders in their communities who have worked alongside Toronto Community Housing to create positive change for their fellow tenants. Check out the International Women’s Day spread in our tenant newsletter, now called Tenant Loop.

Welcome: Tenant Loop

Toronto Community Housing’s tenant newsletter, Housing Update, has been renamed Tenant Loop. We have refocused the newsletter to include more features on tenants and communities. With this new name, we want to promote two-way communications and engagement between the organization and tenants. The title change also reflects our ongoing commitment to being more tenant-centric.
