It's going to be an exciting couple of months!
Governor Cuomo has announced that his administration will set an energy efficiency policy by Earth Day, and we are working to make sure New York adopts the strongest and most comprehensive energy efficiency target in the nation. We're also gearing up for the annual New York Geothermal Conference April 18 & 19. And we are continuing the push for a 100% New York Green Energy option that the Public Service Commission promised in 2016 so that people who do not want to subsidize nuclear reactos could choose to support renewable energy instead.

Join us online March 22: learn more about energy efficiency
and get involved!

We invite clean energy advocates and climate activists from across the state to participate in an online teach-in on March 22. Join by video or phone to learn about the importance of energy efficiency in meeting New York's climate and clean energy goals, creating green jobs, and having healthier homes. Speakers will include energy efficiency advocates, community based organizations, and the energy efficiency industry. We will talk about how to make sure the new energy efficiency policy benefits all people and reduces dirty fuels in all sectors. Please share the March 22 teach-in Facebook event throughout your networks.

Renewable Heating and Cooling Conference is Coming Up!

An opportunity to dig deeper into the renewable heat transition is the New York Geothermal Energy Organization's (NY-GEO's) fourth annual Renewable Heating & Cooling Conference in Albany, NY on April 18 and 19. NY-GEO is a nonprofit trade association dedicated to promoting the use of ground-source heat pumps to heat and cool buildings in New York State and is a member of the Renewable Heat Now campaign. Their 2018 conference program will help installers, organizers, architects, contractors, engineers and NY residents increase the momentum for renewable heat in New York and across the northeast.

The NY-GEO annual conference is an excellent venue for learning about heating and cooling without burning fossil fuels and a great opportunity to meet representatives from state agencies involved in developing New York State energy policy, national and international geothermal experts, leading geo designers and installers, and members of our grassroots groups including our Renewable Heat Now campaign. You don't have to be a member of NY-GEO to attend the conference. Take a look at the conference student rate and a special Geothermal 101 April 18 half-day offer!

As Renewable Heat Now enters a second year of advocacy and education, we proudly reflect on our first year when we:
  • Organized 2 state-wide public workshop tours with talks by Dr. Arjun Makhijani and Jay Egg;
  • Won renewable heat rebates for ground source and air source heat pumps and on-bill financing in New York State and helped win the reinstatement of a geothermal tax credit at the federal level;
  • Advocated for a reversal of New York’s gas expansion policy, insisting that New York State. Utilities, and building owners should NOT receive incentives to continue investing in fossil fuel infrastructure;
  •  Advocated for updating building codes to eliminate fossil fuel heating in new construction;
  • Continued to call for policies and assistance especially for low-income homeowners to afford the up-front costs of heat pump equipment;
  • And in December 2017, we brought together over 100 renewable heating supporters at the “Heat Our Homes, Not The Planet” rally in Albany.

Ask for a renewable energy option instead of paying NY's nuclear subsidy!

And we again invite you to sign and share the petition calling on Governor Cuomo to give NY electricity customers the nuclear subsidy opt-out option the Public Service Commission promised us in 2016. New Yorkers must push for a 100% New York renewable energy option! This option must be designed so that when customers select it, their obligations to buy  nuclear “zero emissions credits” are retired in order to move New York toward more aggressive action to address climate change and nuclear contamination. As we approach the April 1st one-year anniversary of the nuclear bailout, we will let you know about more actions for this campaign.

We hope you will join us online March 22 and in Albany April 18 & 19
Thank you for all you do to support our efforts!
