Mordecai CAC February minutes:

Mordecai CAC minutes from the February 13th, 2018 meeting Co-Chairs Aaron Afarian and Sean Farres welcomed everyone to the meeting. There were 26 people in attendance, and the January minutes were approved.

Police Report Officer Taylor gave an update for the prior 32 days. There were 22 reports total, one vehicle theft (keys in car), 17 drug arrests (mostly in club areas), one robbery, one burglary, one assault, and one weapons. An attendee reported a semi-aggressive panhandler. Officer Taylor says that there is an ordinance that panhandling cannot take place within 50 feet of a residence, at night, by groups of three or more, within proximity of cash machines, and without a permit. Please call 911 if you are uncomfortable. An attendee asked about large trucks parked on residential streets. Officer Taylor responded that moving trucks, pods, mobile homes, RVs, and large trailers cannot be left overnight on residential streets. An attendee brought up the recent wreck and safety concerns on the one way section of Courtland. An attendee noted their appreciation of the electronic speedometer signs on Wake Forest Rd.

Parks and Rec Josh Ingersoll, site manager for the Mordecai Historic Park Registration for all summer camps is March 5-8th. The egg hunt will be on March 24th. An attendee asked whether homeless people are served by the parks. Mr. Ingersoll said that there are some programs. See the city website for reduced or waived fees, often sponsored by third parties.

Traffic/Person Street Partnership, Philip Bernard Philip has reached out to the city regarding the Wake Forest Road Corridor Project, and at the time of the meeting had not heard back from them. It is supposed to take place this spring. The January minutes reported that the Retro Fitness site was under contract, that has fallen through and it is still available.

Committee Reports
Parks, Joe Layton. A number of parks committee volunteers helped to spread mulch at the mini park. On Wednesday March 7th from 8:30 to 10:30 volunteers are welcome to help take down invasive species plants.

Zoning, Sean Farres. There has been a variance request for the Courtland Street apartments address. Philip Bernard made a motion to revise the MCAC bylaws regarding “Procedures for Review of Rezoning requests in the Mordecai CAC (MCAC)". The motion is as follows: To add the "Procedures for Review of Rezoning requests in the Mordecai CAC (MCAC)" to the MCAC bylaws under Article V: Section 4: Item #5: after the committee description. These procedures, provided in a handout to attendees, were compiled by a past zoning committee in an effort to provide guidelines for future zoning issues and requests. Including them in the by-laws will ensure that they are easy to find and reference. The motion will be held up for a vote in the March meeting.

The Gables Motel is now under contract for purchase by Tift Merrit, and may go for a rezoning request. Tift spoke at the meeting and said that although it is in bad shape now they are considering rehabilitation. She said that they intend to honor its story and make it something beautiful.

Communication, Dana Deaton. There has been a good response to the facebook live streamed meetings. Aaron and Sean attended the RCAC retreat, the focus was on social media presence. They said the MCAC is the most tech savvy!

Signs, Sean Farres. The new signs have been picked up and should be installed within the next two months. An attendee asked whether the posts would be concrete, the answer is no, they must be breakaway. Sean brought up a few ideas for what to do with the old signs; trash, sell, fundraiser auction or raffle?

Committee chair positions open are Awards and Grants, Yard Sale (spring), and Zoning. Descriptions of these positions are on the website in the bylaws. More than one chair is great.

Following the committee reports the meeting broke into work groups where we wrote down ideas and comments (concerns and good stuff) about what we would like to see in future meetings, then results were shared.

The next Mordecai CAC meeting will be held on Tuesday March 13th, 7:30 pm, at the Mordecai Historic Park Visitor’s Center.
