Welcome to 2018!

Our team is working hard to deliver new content for the Tuesday Tips newsletter. Please stay tuned!

Mac Outlook clients and Daylight Savings Time

A minor software bug has been discovered in Outlook for Mac clients which can cause unexpected behavior when viewing your calendar appointments during the week of March 11 - 17.
  • Appointments on your calendar may appear off by one hour due to Daylight Savings Time when viewing your calendar with "Week" view, which includes weekends.
Microsoft is developing a software fix and expects it to be available shortly. In the meantime, to work around this issue:
  • On the Calendar view in Outlook for Mac, use the "Day" or "Work Week" view instead of "Week" view.
If you have any additional issues with Outlook please open a ticket with our service desk.

Your voice matters!

On each ticket that is resolved by the Service Desk, Social Sciences IT will solicit your feedback on quality, responsiveness, and other metrics which help us better understand and improve the service we provide.

On your "Solution Proposed" email, look out for this line: Want to provide feedback? Please take a moment to complete a brief survey to rate our service. A link is provided to submit your feedback.

A few minutes of your time can provide us with valuable information we might miss otherwise. Be a champion for the service you receive - Have your say, take the survey!

Roles Management and You

Social Sciences IT offers the Roles Management tool for clusters and labs to easily manage new or exiting users without having to open a ticket. A few examples of how one could use Roles Management:
  • Managing access to lab computers and file shares
  • Managing mailing lists created in Sympa
  • Controlling which users can/can't print in your group, or print with a quota
With such a powerful tool comes great responsibility. It is important to keep your Roles Management administration scheme up-to-date so your group is always able to handle user management. To do so, please keep a few tips in mind:
  • Plan ahead: When you have an extended absence, be sure to notify our Service Desk so we can work with you to add a delegated representative who can update Roles Management for you while you are away.
  • Don't assume: Users who leave your lab or group often still have other reasons for maintaining an active UCD Computing Account. Without your intervention, these users may still be in your Roles groups! Don't assume that a user will be removed automatically - check periodically to ensure your Roles Management groups contain only users which are supposed to be there.
  • Engage us if you have questions: Our team is happy to assist with any Roles Management questions you may have. Be on the safe side and reach out to us if you run into any problems!
