Improving Characterization of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions in the United States

Understanding, quantifying, and tracking atmospheric methane and emissions is essential for addressing concerns and informing decisions that affect the climate, economy, and human health and safety. Atmospheric methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) ... [more]

Public Session on Reproducibility and Replicability in Science: Meeting Number Three

The Committee on Reproducibility and Replicability in Science will conduct its third meeting on April 18-19, 2018 at the Keck Center of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine at 500 5th St., NW, Washington, DC.

A public session will take place on the afternoon of April 18.  The tentative agenda will feature presentations on the economics of reproducibility in science. In addition presentations will focus on reproducibility and replicability challenges in physical and earth sciences and in industry and industrial engineering.

The session will conclude with a public comment period.  Individuals are invited to provide 3 minutes of commentary on topics related to reproducibility and replicability in science.Visit the website for more information.

Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System Report Released

NAP released on March 6, 2018 the public version of the BAST report Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (CUAS) Capability for Battalion-and-Below Operations. This is an abbreviated version of a more comprehensive classified report that was disseminated to the Army, the DoD, and the broader government. The BAST conducted this study at the request of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology (ASAALT) and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC). The report broadly assesses the current state of the art for small unmanned aircraft systems (sUASs) and how performance capabilities are expected to evolve within the next 8 years, assesses current approaches to counter sUASs, describes logistics and human factors considerations for counter-sUAS systems and approaches, and provides a science and technology roadmap for counter-sUAS technology.

Both the classified and public reports have received a great deal of attention. In the government, the full report has been widely disseminated to Army organizations, the other Services, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, several DoD Agencies, and congressional staffers. It has been reported back that the report is already having an effect on how the Army thinks about the sUAS threat and how to respond to it. The public report has been downloaded over 1,400 times around the world, and the committee chair, Mr. Albert Sciarretta, has given several interviews, including to British and Spanish publications. The public report can be downloaded on the National Academies Press website.

Come to the Science & Engineering Festival

Join us at the USA Science & Engineering Festival Expo on April 7-8, 2018 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. You'll find the NASEM's DecisionTown section in Hall D, and visit DEPS at Turtle Beach where visitors will learn about sea turtle conservation. Learn more at the Festival website. We hope to see you there!

Space Science Week Public Lecture Available to Watch

Dr. David Reitze discusses "The Gravitational Wave Astronomical Revolution" in his talk about how the LIGO Observatories detect gravitational waves and how gravitational-wave observatories promise to revolutionize astronomy in the coming years and decades. You can watch it here and visit the Space Science Week website.

Register for Fuel Economy Committee Meeting Webcast

You are invited to participate in the first study committee meeting for "Improving Fuel Economy of Light-Duty Vehicles" on May 10, 2018 from 1-5 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C. If you are unable to attend in person we invite you to register for the webcast. Government, industry and non-governmental experts will address the committee on its statement of task during this first open information gathering session.
