OSC Publishes Seniors Strategy

As part of our continued efforts to deliver strong investor protection and responsive regulation, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) today published its Seniors Strategy (OSC Staff Notice 11-779), which outlines new initiatives to respond to the needs of older investors and better equip registered firms and representatives to address issues that may arise as their clients age.

The OSC’s vision is a stronger and more secure financial future for all Ontario seniors. Our Seniors Strategy includes a comprehensive action plan of targeted policy, operational, research, educational and outreach initiatives to ensure that older Ontarians’ needs are appropriately met by the OSC and the investment industry. Read the OSC Seniors Strategy

We appreciate the support, linked to below, that many organizations have expressed today for the Seniors Strategy.

These include self-regulatory organizations such as IIROC and the MFDA, and investment industry associations such as IFIC, IIACPMAC and the PCMA. In addition, seniors' and investor advocacy groups such as CARP and FAIR Canada have also issued statements of support, as did OBSI and the FPSC.

We recognize that the way to achieve our vision is dependent in part on engagement and partnerships with stakeholders, including the financial industry, working together to achieve our shared goals. We look forward to continuing this dialogue with stakeholders as we move forward with implementing the various initiatives contemplated by this Strategy.

Investing As We Age

The data tells us that people are living longer than ever, and older Ontarians make up a growing portion of the population. At the same time, the financial lives of individuals aged 65 and older are becoming more complex. Read the Seniors Strategy to learn more about some of the research and data that informed its development.
