GET TO KNOW YOUR PTO! Last year, 787 of our Julian students engaged in one-of-a-kind, hands-on projects in science, architecture, and technology -- all free of charge thanks to the support of the Oak Park Education Foundation.  We saw wonderful moments of real-world connections. And, the PTO just donated $3,500 to OPEF to help keep these opportunities available for our students.

Dine Around Town This Wednesday, March 21!
Drop by Q-BBQ at 124 N. Marion Street anytime between 11 am - 9 pm.  Be sure to show a copy of the flyer (either printed or electronic) when you order.   Twenty percent of the bill goes back to Julian and helps fund programs for our students/teachers and staff.

ATTENTION:  Lost & Found items must be picked up by dismissal time, Monday, March 19. Anything not retrieved will be disposed of or donated. Thank you!
The 8th Grade Bash is quickly approaching! Melanie McQueen has graciously offered to chair this event and has some great ideas to increase student involvement in the planning stages. However, she will need some parent leads to help make this happen. If you are interested in helping as a parent lead (or have questions about what this entails), please contact Melanie.  A Sign Up Genius will be distributed after Spring Break to sign up for other positions needed that night as well.
Congratulations to our Speech and Drama Teams!
District 97 earned 1st place at West 40 Speech and Drama Festival for the 8th straight year held on March 3rd. The district’s team, composed of students and teachers/coaches from Brooks and Julian middle schools, took home one of the two first place trophies that were awarded, and finished just one point behind District 96 for the top score in the competition.  Congratulations to all who participated!

Don't forget to read  The Middle Matters,
Dr. Fitzgerald's newsletter to the Julian community.
There has been a lot going on at Julian recently, and this will get you in the know.

Congratulations to the Julian Middle School Math Team that took 1st place overall in our division at the IMSA Math Competition earlier this week!  See The Middle Matters for details.
Congratulations and Applause go to Mr. Kanwischer and the Julian Jazz Combo for their Performance at the 2018 NEA Leadership Summit.  These students performed in front of an audience of 2,000 educators and the NEA President, Lily Eskelsen Garcia came onto the set to tell the kids they were amazing! Great job to all involved!
Online Registrations for CASTSummer Have Begun! Please take a look at CastSummer as you make your summer plans.  Registration deadline for 5th-8th students is April 6 and for 3rd-4th students, April 27.  Questions can be directed to Kathy Simon or call 708-524-7848.
Parents/Guardians of 7th Graders: Have You Turned in Your Student's Springfield Trip Documents? Payments, permission and health forms are due by Wednesday, April 4.  We are trying to get a 100% participation rate, so if you have any questions, please email Principal Smith.  And, if needed, the PTO is offering scholarships so that no student misses out on this fun, educational trip.  More chaperones are needed for this trip, so please check the box on the permission slip if you can help out.  And, please fill out this required health form.
Did You Know Julian is the Only School in District 97 that Does Not Have a Garden? Not for long! Based on the planning by teachers Mr. Meglan and Mr. Youngberg as well as Mr. Walsh and the 6th grade design classes, the Julian PTO has pledged $1700 to build the raised gardens that will be accessible to all students. However, there are still some tasks that need to be tackled before the growing begins. Do you have a pickup truck and can you transport lumber? Please contact Mr. Meglan to help. There will also be a plant sale to raise funds to purchase the other items needed to make this garden happen. Ordering will begin after Spring Break and pickup will be on Friday, May 18.  For more details about Julian's garden, please take a look at this presentation.
Students, Oak Park Public Library is looking for poetry, short stories, essays, comics, and art to feature in their new teen newsletter. Submit entries by March 31 to be in the first edition.  Please see this  flyer for details on how to get published in future newsletters.  Please direct any questions to Ms. Winchell.
