2018 VAFF Season
and Festival

VAFF celebrates its 2018 Season and 22nd annual festival with a year-long exploration of the diverse artists, agitators, thinkers, and innovators who shape the living experience of contemporary Canadians and the array of influences that inform their work.

This year’s annual theme of INFUSIAN shines a spotlight on individuals and communities who create new art and culture by blending together old and new, East and West, classic and cutting-edge, myriad ways of living and thinking. It also reflects the undeniable hybridity of modern Canada, with varied heritages, histories, and cultures coming together in endless combinations to create a vibrant cross-cultural landscape.  VAFF will release its full 2018 list of programming in May during Asian Heritage Month, keep checking our website to find out the exciting events and ways in which we will feature this annual theme in the year ahead!

VAFF, explorASIAN, and REEL CANADA team up for NCFD 2018 free screening

National Canadian Film Day (NCFD) is back, and we’re partnering with explorASIAN, REEL CANADA, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, and the Museum of Vancouver to bring you a very special encore screening of Canadian filmmaker Ashley Duong’s A Time to Swim, winner of the Director’s Guild of Canada Best Canadian Feature Award at our 2017 Vancouver Asian Film Festival in November.

This FREE SCREENING is part of an event held in communities across the country on April 18, 2018, to expose Canadians to some great Canadian films, and our screening will take place at 7:00 pm at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre!

Come and experience this important film about a Montreal man and his family who travel back to his home village deep in the forests of Malaysia and use GPS technology to help their indigenous people protect their traditional lands from encroaching environmental destruction.

The film will be preceded by "Re Lekuah" by Alena Murang, directed by Ashley Duong, the first-ever music video created in the indigenous Kelabit language of Borneo.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

LunarFest Recap

Thank you to everyone who came by VAFF’s Wish Tree booth at the 2018 Lunarfest celebration February 24-25 at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza! Hundreds of wishes were cast upon our glowing blossom trees over the weekend. Among those many wishes received and those who signed up for our contact list draw, we’d like to congratulate the very lucky Alli McLaren and Alison Stockbrocks, who each won a pair of tickets to our 22nd annual festival in November! We wish them both all the best of luck and success in the Lunar Year of the Dog.
