Cheap tricks


In the past years, the industry couldn’t care less about young pilots entering the profession. They were seen as “cash cows” by the training schools, certain airlines and broker agencies. In fact, a whole new industry was born that can churn out many more young pilots than the industry actually needs. Once these young & enthusiastic people found one of the rare jobs, they had to pay their type rating, their recurrent training and some even had to pay for gaining experience, as the numerous Pay-to-Fly practices have shown. Keep reading +

Legislation alert: Random testing & Peer Support Programmes by 2020


Random alcohol testing of air crews is coming to Europe. The introduction of this new rule – once approved by the European Parliament – will happen no later than 2020. At the end of February, the EU Member States in the so-called ‘EASA Committee' approved a set of rules, including random alcohol checks of crews as part of the ramp inspection programmes. Keep reading +

The female voice of pilots


We interviewed 4 female pilots who not only chose to become part of the modest “5% of female pilots” in Europe but shattered stereotypes, redefined roles and became the voice of pilots. All 4 of them are active pilot union representatives who dedicate much of their ‘personal’ time to discuss pilot training standards and participate in hundreds of meetings across the world on issues ranging from Collective Labour Agreements to runway safety.  Keep reading +

Stronger together


Aviation workers sometimes face similar problems and sticking together is their best bet when confronting government or employer. Croatian pilots can speak from experience. In 2013, pilots and cabin crew joined forces for a mid-season strike, effectively forcing their airline to finally step into negotiations for a new Collective Labour Agreement.  Keep reading +
