2018 Linguistic Society of America
Annual Meeting

In January, Verna and several of her colleagues traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to be part of LSA's annual meetings. SIL International had a booth in the Display area and Verna manned the booth, demonstrating SIL's software and online tools for compiling and publishing dictionaries.
In the SIL booth, we displayed SIL publications from around the world. Many conference participants stopped by and eagerly watched my demonstration of Webonary.org.
One evening, Verna enjoyed listening to the 360 member Mormon Tabernacle choir practice with the 110 members of the Orchestra at Temple Square.

Our move to Greenville, Texas

[Check out our new mailing address below.]
Jason and Anna strongly encouraged us to move closer to them, so on January 12th, with the help of friends and family, we packed the moving vans and drove 65 miles north-east to our new place in the country. After two months of unpacking, getting new flooring, putting up shelves and beds, we finally feel settled and we are back to our current assignments with SIL/Wycliffe. We praise the Lord for all the miracles that have made this move possible.
We are living in the country about 5 miles from town and 15 minutes from Jason & Anna. For the first time, we attend the same church as they do and it is such a joy to share a pew in church with them.
Because we both grew up in the country, this move feels a lot like we've come home. It is a joy to listen to the birds singing and to hear the cows mooing in the pasture.

Our work

Our son, Jason has provided a really fast Internet connection for us, so we can do all our work remotely. Several times a week, Verna meets with her staff on the computer using Zoom or Skype. Robert is just finishing up the last half of the Exegetical Summary of Acts.
Recently, Verna co-authored an article, Single-event Rapid Word Collection workshops: Efficient, effective, empowering, which was just published in the on-line journal, Language Documentation & Conservation.
Since Robert helps develop resources for Translator's Workplace, you might find the article, SIL International and Zondervan Academic work together for global Bible translation by Religion News Service interesting. It references Translator's Workplace.

From the field

Fred and Evelyn Carress, who have worked in the Philippines for many years, translating the Bible, recently received word that funding for Print Publishing the dictionary was no longer available. They wrote, “We decided to place the dictionary on the SIL Webonary since the current trend is to move away from expensive heavy books toward Internet access of such documents by digital devices.
It is always a pleasure to see how our work positively impacts Bible translation projects.
We are planning our summer trips:
  • We will be flying to Fort McMurray, Alberta April 25th - April 30th for a Missions conference in McMurray Gospel Assembly.
  • We plan to arrive in Manitoba on July 6th, in time for a Penner (Verna's) family reunion. We're looking forward to seeing many of you.
  • We hope to visit Indiana again, but we don't have dates for that yet.

Thank you for your friendship, your prayers, and your financial support. Without you on our team, we would not be able to do the work Father God has called us to. We pray for you daily. May Father God continue to prosper you and keep you in health. May all your prayers be answered.
