Exciting Policy Updates for Local Retail
Since our founding in 2005, Cambridge Local First has been the lead advocate for local policies and programs that support our independent business community. We are delighted to share several recent developments that show promising steps forward to ensure we maintain a vibrant streetscape of local businesses that contribute 3 times as much money to our community compared to chain stores.

Retail Strategy Report
The City of Cambridge plans to hire a full-time staff person to execute the recommendations laid out in last year's Retail Strategy Report, which covered a comprehensive analysis of local needs and opportunities. We look forward to serving as a committed partner to the new hire, and send a big thanks to the City Manager for recognizing the importance of funding these efforts.

Vacant Storefronts
The City is in the process of hiring a consultant to investigate how we might address vacant store fronts, with work expected to be completed before June 30. CLF is also working with an MIT graduate student team that is in the process of developing a new, innovative model for arts programming in vacant spaces.

Commercial Recycling Pilot Program
The Department of Public Works is exploring a pilot program to provide free curbside recycling services to local businesses. Please fill out their survey to help them design the program and make it a reality. Contact Michael Orr, Recycling Director, for any questions.

Brown Bag Lunch & Learn with City Councilors and City Staff
CLF recently co-hosted with CDD a lunch and learn session on the local economy movement. We would like to send another big thank you to the city councilors, their aides, and the city staff who joined us for a lively conversation. City councilors or their staff who attended included Dennis Carlone, Jan Devereux, Alanna Mallon, Sumbul Siddiqui, and Quinton Zondervan.

CLF will be following these important initiatives as well as identifying other key areas of focus for our local policy efforts. Please get involved with our Government Affairs Committee to ensure that our local independent business community has a strong voice in these conversations!

RSVP to CLF Government Affairs Meeting on March 27 @ 10 am
