Your March TriEx Update

We are well into 2018 now and TriEx has entered its busiest time of the year with our Flu Vaccination season in full swing! TriEx are excited to be one of the first to vaccinate this year as our flu vaccines arrived straight from the manufacturer on Monday morning.

This years vaccine is the Quadrivalent vaccine and has been modified to provide cover against the deadly flu strain that has caused havoc in the northern hemisphere. This year it's more important than ever to vaccinate and to receive the updated vaccine. Not only can complications from the flu be deadly, it can also affect people's mental health. Find out more below.

Our Occupational Hygiene team recently spent a week in Auckland to sit a BOHS course on the methods for the measurement and sampling of airborne hazardous substances. This was an upskilling experience for the team, it reaffirmed what they had already been doing and has equipped them with new tools and techniques. Read the full story below.

TriEx is seeing some tremendous growth at the moment, especially in our asbestos department, so we're on the lookout for some Asbestos Surveyors to join the TriEx Team in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. You can read more about this below.

Enjoy the read! From the TriEx Team.

Influenza and Mental Health

As of this week, our nurses will be out vaccinating across New Zealand.

Influenza is well known for being particularly severe due to the complications it can cause, which can lead to hospitalisation or death. But what's less well known is its relationship with mental health.

Research that's come out of the UK has suggested that those infected with influenza have a moderately increased risk of developing depression. The increased risk is greater for each previous infection of influenza, and individuals are most at risk in the first months after an infection.

This year its more important than ever to be vaccinated. At the peak of the flu season that has just occurred in the United States, 4000 people were dying each week, and many many more were infected. The goods news is this years vaccination has been modified to cover this strain.

Latest results showed that 26% of people are infected with influenza each year, but 4 out of 5 of those carriers show no symptoms, and they can still pass the flu onto others who may be more vulnerable.

Join the fight against Influenza, and protect your team and those in your community. Book your onsite Flu Vaccination, go to theflu.co.nz or email flu@triex.co.nz

Occupational Hygiene Upskilling

Ian Bensemann and Nashid Khela, TriEx’s two Occupational Hygienists have just spent a week in Auckland participating in a British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) course on the methods for the measurement and sampling of airborne hazardous substances.

Ian Benesmann

Occupational Hygienist

Nashid Khela

Occupational Hygienist

The course was run at the Whenuapai Air Force base and was made up of theory and practical work.

This course was conducted at a high level equivalent to level 6. Prior experience and knowledge was essential before undertaking this course.

The course was of benefit in that it reaffirmed what Nashid and Ian have been doing by way of Air monitoring, and it provided them with updates regarding techniques, methods, equipment and analysis techniques for different types of samples.

Both Ian and Nashid work with a wide variety of our clients who require their working environment to be monitored for airborne contaminants such as fumes, vapours and dust. The industries that most frequently undertake air monitoring include manufacturing, sawmills, seed processors and bakeries, but there are numerous other companies who use our Occupational Hygiene Services.

TriEx at Relay for Life

Over the weekend, some members of our fantastic Occupational Health team participated in the Relay for Life. Relay for Life is about celebrating with survivors, remembering loved one lost to cancer and coming together as a community to fight back against cancer.

'The Incredibles' team who participated raised over $3,000 for the cancer society, and won the best-dressed team prize for their Incredibles costumes, thanks to the efforts of our Health team.

We're very proud of our great team culture at TriEx, and this is a great example of our awesome people banding together and supporting one another.

Fatigue in the Workplace

Many industries rely on workers being physically and mentally alert. Fatigue is a state of physical and/or mental exhaustion which reduces a person’s ability to perform work safely and effectively. Fatigue reduces alertness. This may lead to errors, and an increase in workplace incidents and injuries.

What can you do to eliminate fatigue in the workplace? First you must always eliminate the risk where you’re reasonably able to. Where you’re not reasonably able to, then you need to consider what you can do to minimise the risk.

WorkSafe NZ have a series of resources available to help you address fatigue. These can be found here.

WorkSafe NZ Prosecutions

Miller Foods Limited, trading as Remarkable Tortillas were sentenced after a workers arm was trapped in an oven whilst it was aflame. Multiple sources of risk needed to be managed in this incident.

The worker was cooking tortillas in a commercial tortilla press and oven when his glove became caught and his right hand and arm were drawn into the oven. Other workers freed the man’s arm, but were not immediately aware of what to do in an emergency.

WorkSafe’s investigation found that Remarkable Tortillas had inadequate health and safety systems, failed to ensure a risk assessment of the machinery was carried out, failed to provide suitable guarding, and failed to ensure that workers were adequately trained and were aware of an appropriate emergency system.

Reparations of $52,282.97 were ordered to be paid. No fines were imposed for reasons that were suppressed by the Court but would have been $337,500 had they been ordered.
Marshall Industries Limited were sentenced, after a worker sustained serious injuries to his right hand.

The worker had made a number of clips when the material got stuck. After attempting to free a jammed clip with some wire, the worker reached up through the outlet chute with his hand. This was not adequately guarded. The worker inadvertently made contact with the controls and the press activated, amputating four digit tips from his right hand.

WorkSafe’s investigation found that Marshall Industries exposed their worker to the risk of serious injury, specifically the risk of crushing between the accessible tool and die of the press, and departed from industry standards for safe use of machinery.

A fine of $180,000 was imposed on the company, as well as reparations of $53,677 to be paid to the victim.
