Here are a few updates since last time:

ON A GOOD DAY
We're inviting Heads and/or senior leaders from schools and colleges in the area to a gathering on the 20th March at the Downe Arms. The session will bring together the support and professional development offered through our programme alongside that of partner organisations, including North Yorkshire County Council, the Scarborough and Esk Valley Teaching Schools and the Research School. We are developing a shared calendar of activity that schools can use to understand what is available and to inform their school plans #seethroughthefog. Free tickets here.

FLYING A KITE
The first of our Opportunity Area Awards has been awarded to Scarborough Sixth Form College. They will work with the Behavioural Insights team to deliver two projects that build social support between, and for, students and help improve their outcomes and enrolment at university.
Schools and Colleges can apply here - projects should be linked in some way to our programme delivery plan. Additional funding is available for collaborative projects between schools.
Our first award to a youth-led social mobility project is on the way. Applications remain open here.

MEAN, RUN, SING
There has been considerable interest from schools, schools leaders and teachers aspiring to leadership in enrolment on an eligible National Professional Qualification. These are available at middle (NPHML), senior (NPQSL), head (NPQH) and executive head (NPQEL) levels. The approved providers for these reformed qualifications are here and include a range of local and national providers. You can contact these providers directly to book a place.

THE BOOK OF RIGHT-ON
We have partnered with the National Literacy Trust to launch a Literacy Hub on the Coast. This will focus on different ways to champion the power of literacy and a love of reading to help skills in comprehension, interaction and expression. We want to hear from anyone with a passion in being part of this. The National Literacy Trust is looking for a manager to lead the work on the Coast - apply here.

WHAT WE HAVE KNOWN
Scarborough Pledge funding is supporting four primary schools to take part in a pilot project this summer with the aim of involving more local people in supporting reading within schools. Posters are on display in libraries, shops, village halls, cafes and churches asking for potential 'reading volunteers', who can apply via this simple form.
Volunteers will undergo training on reading with children, have DBS checks and commit to a minimum of an hour a week. The pilot primary schools are Newby and Scalby, Seamer and Irton, St. Martin's and Wheatcroft. The pilot will be evaluated before a decision on whether to expand this across the area.

HAVE ONE ON ME
Professor Dame Alison Peacock is Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching and is on her way to the Coast on 23rd May. Dame Alison will talk about her research into Learning Without Limits and her approach to leadership. She will also discuss the role of the new professional body for all teachers to connect, inform and inspire.
This event is all thanks to Scarborough Teaching School Alliance. Demand for tickets has been very high and the event will be held in the Grand Hall at The Spa. Get your tickets here for free.

EN GALLOP
We are supporting work to attract and retain teaching talent to the Coast, extending the work that began under the Scarborough Pledge. All Schools have - or will be - asked for recruitment data, which will be followed by analysis and practical advice. Attention will then shift to workforce performance, career development and succession planning - all focussed on proven approaches. 91% of Scarborough and Filey schools will have been involved by the end of the Spring term; work with Whitby schools starts in the summer term.
The project has is already identified excellent practice in place. Examples include: Seamer and Irton Primary School where staff have dynamic objectives that are reviewed through regular performance discussions and evolve according to school and teacher need. At St. Augustine's School, there is a cultural commitment to open, honest and supportive conversations to drive school achievement and high performance. Contact Sarah Barron for more.

GO LONG
Early March witnessed another successful National Careers and National Apprenticeships week. Hundreds, if not thousands, of opportunities were created for pupils to interact with the world of work through mock interviews, employer and enterprise challenges and much more. Highlights included:
- More than 600 secondary students attending the Successful Futures event at CU Scarborough;
- Robert Goodwill MP visiting Caedmon College to find out about their work, as well as the commitment of employers across the Coast; and
- Burberry inspiring hundreds of students with a series of workshops, including one where pupils designed a trench coast for female pioneers to coincide with International Women's Day.

ANECDOTES
22 schools have signed up to our professional development programme for maths that will take place in the summer term, led by the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub. Professional development opportunities include: Edge Hill’s Intervention in a Mastery Context programme, First Class@number supporting KS1 teaching and Success@arithmetic supporting KS2 and KS3 teaching.
Courses are free and the maths hub is offering funding towards cover costs for participating teachers and teaching assistants. Places are going quickly, more info available from the Maths Hub.
A dozen schools and settings have signed up to our flagship early years project. Early years professionals will work with settings and schools to undertake a setting wide assessment using a framework called ‘Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Wellbeing Scales’. This approach looks at how adults interact with children and provides a framework through which these interactions can be developed to extend learning and development. Our early years group will meet on Monday 19 March to review this work and to discuss what we do next. More information from the Scarborough Teaching School.

Ys
National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government-backed programme open to all 16 and 17 year-olds and was established to help build a more cohesive, mobile and engaged society. Nearly 400,000 young people have now taken part across the country and young people from the Coast raised over £11,000 for local charities through NCS last year. 16 and 17 year-olds can still sign up to take part this Summer here.
Flying Futures deliver NCS in the area and are recruiting driven, passionate and reliable Seasonal Staff to coach, motivate, lead and support young people through their experience of the NCS Programme. More here.

TIME, AS A SYMPTON
Since 2006, the bi-annual Growing Up in North Yorkshire (GUNY) survey has collected information which helps the county council, schools and partners to develop strategies and actions to make North Yorkshire a safe, healthy and happy place to grow up.
The 2018 survey is registering now. This information will be one data-set that can help measure the impact of our work so it will be of benefit to all schools to sign up before Easter. There is no cost to participate and each school will receive a bespoke feedback of responses to help with your strategic planning.
