Calcbench and Tax Reform

2017 Tax Disclosures: Getting Started: So you want to go nuts with data and disclosures about tax reform? Calcbench has your back. Start with this rundown of where companies will typically make the most interesting disclosures, how they classify information about tax reform, and where you can find all the data on Calcbench.

Deferred Tax Assets and Tax Reform: One big part of what companies say about tax reform will involve deferred tax assets and liabilities. The cut in the statutory tax rate from 35 to 21 percent will change the value of those items significantly, and could lead to some shock numbers for fourth-quarter. Read our Q&A on deferred tax assets.

Wha? One-time Taxes and Effective Rates:
We’re starting to see a counter-intuitive trend in some corporate filings. Thanks to the one-time tax on “deemed repatriated earnings,” some companies are reporting higher effective tax rates for 2017 — way higher, well above 50 percent — as they digest the impact of Year 1 under tax reform. Read more.

Geeking Out on the Data
Amazon Segment Disclosures and HQ2: Speculating about where Amazon might locate its second headquarters? Could a new headquarters be a prelude to Amazon splitting up some day? Here’s what we learned from our Segments, Rollforwards, and Breakouts database.
Dunkin Donuts and the Ice Cream Adjustment: Dunkin Donuts filed its 2017 annual report complete with how it will implement the new accounting standard for revenue recognition. Included in that disclosure is — we’re not kidding — a $14.3 million “ice cream royalty adjustment.” What can others learn from Dunkin’s superb disclosure? Read more inside.
An Early Peek at Share Repurchase Programs: As tax reform takes root across the land, one political question will be what Corporate America does with all its newfound cash: hire more employees and invest in new operations; or buy back more stock? Calcbench took a look at some early year-end filings for 2017. See what the data tells us.
