A coalition of grassroots Indivisible groups using civic engagement to advance progressive values in the California state government

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 7, 2018

Over 40 California Indivisible groups strongly condemn the Trump administration’s baseless lawsuit against the California Values Act

SACRAMENTO - U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration has sued Governor Jerry Brown, Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and the State of California to invalidate and prohibit enforcement of three state laws enacted in 2017. The three laws require that employers prevent  ICE agents from entering workplaces without a valid warrant (AB450); prevent local law enforcement agencies from detaining immigrants on behalf of the federal government (AB103); and, most importantly, prevent state and local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE (California Values Act, SB54), making California a sanctuary state.

“I think Attorney General Sessions misunderstands us. In California, we see how our immigrant neighbors contribute to our local economies and American values overall,” said Debbie Toizer of Indivisible Sausalito. “We want our tax dollars to go toward their intended purpose in our communities – toward education, public health and safety, and functioning roads and bridges – not toward helping deportation agents remove undocumented Americans from their homes and their families.”

“We Californians recognize that the contributions of immigrants are essential to our status as the world's sixth largest economy,” said Duane Bindschadler, Board member of Indivisible CA33. “Immigrants are our co-workers, our friends, our neighbors, and our families. AG Sessions and Trump Administration policies are not only unjust, they are economically irresponsible."

“Immigrants are the bedrock of California,” said Jiggy Athilingam, co-founder of Indivisible CA: StateStrong and the State and Local Policy Manager for Indivisible Project. “In this move, the Trump administration is attacking our core California values while continuing to promote its white supremacist agenda.”

Indivisible groups across California advocated for the passage of many immigrant protection bills in 2017 and will continue to fight for the immigrants in our communities.

Indivisible CA: StateStrong is a grassroots coalition of Indivisible groups in California that applies the principles of the Indivisible Guide to political advocacy at the state level. We influence our representatives in the California Senate and Assembly to sponsor and support legislation that directly resists the policies and actions of the current federal administration. We also promote and support progressive legislation that protects and enhances individual rights, equality and privacy; provides universal quality education and healthcare; enforces corporate responsibility; and protects the climate and environment. Last, we empower residents throughout California with the knowledge and tools with which they can engage and lobby their own state representatives.
