Play the Conditions
Outdoor sports games are often defined by the conditions. How you play the game changes significantly based on the how hot it is, whether it is windy, rainy or snowy.
The NFL occasionally plays in the sort of conditions that gives skiers nightmares. The recent game between the Buffalo Bills and the Indianapolis Colts was played in shockingly cold and snowy conditions. With a blizzard blowing in the stadium a record low number of just 18 passes by both teams were made.
Other sports like baseball, cricket and tennis are usually abandoned when it rains too much. But in these fast ball sports, humidity makes the ball behave differently. Not to mention makes it harder to run!
Great sportspeople are sometimes defined by how they cope with conditions. Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is a master at driving in wet conditions. Hamilton's two victories in the Monaco Grand Prix have both taken place in wet-dry driving conditions.
Trading Conditions Matter
As traders, it is vital for us to play the market conditions. The recent explosion of volatility showed us that the markets are not as docile as we thought. Volatility has recovered from the spike, but it remains higher than it was in January and most of last year.
An indicator that I use for stock indices is the current price compared to the high/low range of the past 100 days. If the indicator is above 50% then markets are usually easier to trade. Winning trades are often smaller but more reliable. If the indicator is below 50%, then trading is more difficult but wins (and losses tend to be larger). US stock indices have recovered well from the February sell-off, but European markets are still well below the 50% line. Until markets have recovered further, I am prepared for more volatility.
Free Renko Spreadsheet for Tradinformed Subscribers
I have recently created a brand new spreadsheet for calculating Renko Charts. You can use this spreadsheet to create your own Renko charts. You can try different markets and different block sizes to get something that works well for you. You can get it here: Renko Charts Spreadsheet
Also, check out the two new Tradinformed videos on Renko Charts. You can see the spreadsheet in action and see what I think about the Renko system.
