Kia ora Koutou

It is my pleasure to officially announce two staff appointments to Coromandel Area School.  In Term 2, we will welcome Ms Charlotte Pearsall as the new teacher of Rm 7, and Miss Kelly Oldridge as our new Head of PE and Outdoor Education.  Both teachers went through a robust application process, in which we had a high calibre of applicants involved. The appointments committee felt that both of these teachers will bring a terrific vibrancy into our school, and will be a great fit into our school culture.  We will welcome them, as a whole school, on the first day of Term 2.

Next week, we will be hosting two reviewers from ERO (Education Review Office).  They will be in our school from Monday. Their main focus will be on reviewing how we are developing a collaborative school culture to raise overall student achievement.  I have no doubt that with the work that has been done over the last two years, coupled with the current vision and strategic aims of our school, we will have a positive, constructive outcome.

I recently attended a Principal’s meeting with all the leaders of the schools in our COL (Community of Learning).  There was great connectivity, and collaboration occurring throughout this day and I am really excited with the initiatives and opportunities our COL are involved in.  As these get finalised, I will be letting our whanau know what is on the horizon for Coromandel Area School, and the main aims of your COL for 2018.

Well done to our swimmers in the Primary years, and our  touch rugby participants in the Senior years, on their participation at the Thames Valley competitions.  It is fabulous to see our involvement and participation in these events continue to grow. At the end of this Term, we will be sending around ten Y10 to Y13 students to the Central North Island Coaching Clinic, in Te Awamutu.  I look forward to seeing our students compete against other students in Area Schools, for a chance to be selected in the Central North Island teams.

Finally, I am extremely happy to announce that our school is now officially a PB4L School-wide school.  PB4L, Positive Behaviour for Learning, is a 3-5 year programme that looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  It supports schools to build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. More information about PB4L will be coming home soon!

Room 5's Koura
Long flickering feelers sensing humans nearby.
Eight tiny legs crawling closer on rough ground.
Two sets of whiskers fluttering up and down.
Hundreds of little joints
Twisting and turning all over town.
One small crayfish with a hard and solid shell.
Two spiky claws nipping left and right.
Thousands of little spikes
doing their job all round.
Two bulging eyes looking wildly aound.

Jack, Room 5

The Koura
Sharp pointy claws scraping across the rocks as it drags the lifeless shape around the muddy sea  .Long thin antenna pops directly up to the surface and disappeared again down in the blue.
Beady black eyes scouring the salty sea for food.
Slim strong legs carrying it around all day on the sandy deep blue sea.

Wheels Day by Room 3
On Friday 16th March, Rooms 1, 2 and 3 had a Wheels Day.
We had a big race around the field after our fruit break.  We went around the track and got puffed out.  We ran around the big court too.  Maxim had a crash because he was going too fast!
We loved Wheels Day!

Communicating with the Board of Trustees

We would like to kindly remind parents & caregivers that when our Board of Trustees members are not sitting in the Boardroom at school, they are parents & caregivers also. The only time they have their 'BoT hat on' is when they are in the Boardroom.  Should parents wish to speak to the Board, lay a complaint, or make a suggestion, there is a process to follow.  The Board of Trustees would like to encourage communication from our whanau & community members, and below are the avenues in which to do this.  If you wish to send anything in writing to the Board, then this can be sent to the School Office, addressed to the Board of Trustees Chairperson.

a) Minor issues may be able to be dealt with in a quick informal chat with a staff member, or through an organised meeting with the staff member concerned.

b) If not sorted, the Senior Leadership Team, of Joan Hart, Victoria Field, Vicki Rouse, & Koren Hopoi can help whanau work through an issue/complaint. (For a complaint against the Principal, it is automatically addressed to the Board).

c) The Board needs to formally receive a complaint in order to act on it.  If the above procedure has not first been followed, the Board will normally return a letter of complaint to the writer and ask that they follow this procedure first.

d) If a complaint is received at the Board level and is dealt with at this level, it will be done so in a private & confidential manner, with only relevant parties being involved.   If you have concerns about expressing the matter clearly in writing, please make a time to meet with the Board Chairperson, (or another delegated Board member) to enable them to assist you with this.
Non-Eligible Students Travelling on the School Buses
From time to time, parents approach the school to ask if non-eligible students can travel on the school bus to stay over at a friend's house for the weekend or attend a birthday party for instance.  The bus contractor has asked that all non-eligible students pay $5.00 each time they use the school bus.  This money is to be paid to Karen in the school office before the student gets on the bus.

Places on the bus cannot be guaranteed for non-eligible students.  Please call Joan Hart at school if you are wanting to inquire about a seat on the bus for an ineligible student.  We are able to give an indication of the likelihood of a seat being available, but are unable to guarantee this will be the case.  If there are no spare seats on the day of the travel, the parent needs to be available to  transport the student themselves.
Be a part of the Coromandel Area School Sports Council
