Gardening To Do List:

Gardening in Idaho is a hot sandwich.  Cold - Hot - Cold.  Cold season veggies are just that, the actual vegetable part of the plant . . . leaf, stem, and root.  Hot season veggies are generally not veggies at all!  What?  Yup, they are fruits!  As we all learned in 7th grade science class, anything with a seed inside is actually a fruit.  Most of our fruiting garden plants are heat loving, whereas, most of the plants we eat the vegetative part of, prefer cooler temperatures.  Neat huh!

St. Patrick's Day is the unofficial launch of the Spring/ cold loving gardening season. Here is a general outline of what the next 2 weeks should look like in the garden
  • Now, direct seed lettuce, kale, arugula, spinach, peas and root crops
  • By St. Patricks Day, begin transplanting all cold crops like those listed above, along with your brassicas such as cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage.
  • As soon as day time temperatures get to, and start to consistently stay above 60 degrees, it will be time to plant potatoes!  Check out our amazing selection of organic seed potatoes and potato growing classes on our website.
  • Plant bare root (plant with no soil around roots) fruit trees, berries, asparagus, rhubarb, horseradish and more!
  • Still time to apply dormant oil for pest control in trees and shrubs, and also time to prune.  FREE pruning class.  Check out our class schedule.
  • If you want tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra ready to plant for May, start them indoors mid-March.  Don't forget supplemental lighting to prevent unhealthy and leggy seedlings.  We have many options, stop in and we can help you figure what you may need if you don't have enough light.
  • Wait until mid April to start veggies in the cucurbit family (cucumbers, melons and squash).  They grow fast and can be transplanted out after just a few short weeks.  Remember, they don't like their roots disturbed, so start them in plantable containers, like coconut coir pots, then plant them out after danger of frost has passed.
