Dear friends and partners,
Only a few days have gone by in 2018 when we haven’t been rocked by the tragedies of a school shooting. This has become an American epidemic. But, the student activists in Parkland and across the nation remind us that we all have a part to play to rid our schools and our communities of gun violence. #EnoughIsEnough.
On Tuesday, March 13, the L.A. Unified Board of Education will consider a resolution that I wrote in partnership with Board President Mónica García and Board Member Kelly Gonez that calls on Congress and the state of California to immediately pass common sense gun safety measures and increase funding for student mental health services.
It also calls on L.A. Unified to reflect on its school safety plans to ensure we are doing everything in our power to keep students safe by creating a Safe Schools Task Force comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, staff, students, law enforcement experts, city agencies, and community organizations to evaluate and make recommendations to improve safety and security plans and practices.
While Congress has abdicated its responsibility to keep students safe—and, as a result, L.A. Unified has students as young as twelve who have access to guns—we will continue to ensure that our schools are places where children can learn and thrive safely and peacefully.
The board meeting is only a few days away. We want to encourage parents, students, and community members to attend the school board meeting to advocate for common sense reforms and safe schools. We need your voice.
