District Insights: What Mentors Mean to Us

“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living — if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.” — Denzel Washington

We may not be Academy Award-winning actors like Denzel Washington, but most of us can relate to his words. Mentors are all around us—most often at work or at school — and they are usually defined by what they give to others. They use their knowledge and experiences to provide guidance to less experienced individuals. Sometimes a simple word of encouragement is the only form of support needed. A mentor can be anyone — a teacher, a community member, a peer — who helps us fine tune our skills and realize our potential.

Since January is National Mentoring Month, which was established to promote youth mentoring in the U.S., I want to highlight some of the amazing mentoring programs available to students in the Hudson City School District. We are proud to have a variety of mentorship opportunities throughout our schools that support student success and development.

"The Sound of Music" at Hudson Jr./Sr. High School

The hills are alive with the sound of music at Hudson Junior/Senior High School! The Hudson Jr./Sr. High Drama Club presents Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” with musical accompaniment including members of the HHS Band. Come and enjoy a musical that originally won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has been a favorite for decades.

Opening night is Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., with additional shows at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2018. All performances are in the Hudson Jr./Sr. High School auditorium.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens (or free with the HCSD Courtesy Card for Senior Citizens—call the district office at 518-828-4360, ext. 2101 for information). Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in the Jr./Sr. High School main offices during school hours. Tickets will also be available at the door before each show time.

ABOUT THE SHOW: "The Sound of Music" is a dramatic portrayal of what happened in Austria when the Third Reich took control. It follows the (mostly) true story of an almost-nun who comes to be a governess for the Family von Trapp during this time. In real life, this family went on to become famous singers and even toured in America. It is presented by the Hudson Jr./Sr. High Drama Club through special arrangements with R&H Theatricals.

Traffic Pattern Changes in Effect

The new driveway on the north side of the junior/senior high school campus officially opened in November 2017. Please be advised that the intersection of Harry Howard Ave and Joslen Blvd is now a four-way stop. Please remember to observe proper "right of way" protocol for four-way stops signs.

Visit our website for an aerial view of the new entrance/exit, as well as important information about the traffic pattern changes.

Mentoring Program Asks Students About Aspirations

To celebrate Black History Month, junior high students in the My Brother’s Keeper mentoring program focused on their dreams and aspirations. Their aspirations and photos were shared on Twitter (@HBNASP) throughout the month of February.

Pictured here, eighth grader Larry said, "After college, I aspire to be a Physical Education teacher. It’s my favorite class and I enjoy exercise. I’d also like to be a chef. My favorite food to cook is an omelet."

Check out all the photos and see what each Hudson MBK student aspires to be in the future!

Elementary student gives box of food donations to school bus driver
Bluehawks Donate 1,000 lbs. of Pet Food

M.C. Smith Intermediate School's annual Stuff the Bus food drive came with a twist. This year, they collected pet food in addition to human food. The human food donations were delivered to the Catholic Charities food pantry, and the pet food donations benefited Out of the Pits and Animal Kind. Students who collected the most food donations got to ride the bus and deliver the items in person!

Overall, students and staff at the Hudson City School District donated more than 1,000 pounds of pet food to local organizations during the holiday season. The HCSD Transportation Dept. also contributed mass quantities of pet food and monetary donations for Animal Kind and the Columbia-Greene Humane Society. See more photos.

Mrs. Bender Named "Top Teacher"

Hudson Senior High School teacher Mrs. Bender was named a WNYT NewsChannel 13 Top Teacher after being nominated by the HHS Student Council. Click here to watch her feature segment on WNYT, which originally aired on January 24, 2018.

Mrs. Bender (smiling in pink!) gave us this photo of her and many of the HHS Student Council members who wrote the nomination letters. In addition to teaching Social Studies and Economics, Mrs. Bender is the facilitator of the student-run Google Help Desk. She also facilitates the H&R Block Budget Challenge, which is a personal finance simulation that allows seniors to compete with students across the country for $20,000 in scholarships.

"Hour of Code" Teaches Kids About Computer Programming

Sixth graders learned how to create computer games during an Hour of Code event in Mr. Millar’s Library Skills class. For this event, a one-hour tutorial showed students how to follow code steps, problem solve and create interactive computer games. Students enjoyed creating new interactive games, as well as completing more complex coding challenges to modify the games and use different functions to build or change the characters. Mr. Millar said the students seemed proud of what they accomplished because they kept calling him over to show off their creations!

Refugee Pen Pals

Here is a heartwarming photo of the happiness that our elementary students were able to provide for refugee children!

Bluehawks at M.C. Smith Intermediate School wrote more than 100 pen pal letters to Syrian refugee children in Ketermaya, Lebanon. Our students also made friendship bracelets with the letters "HKC," meaning Hudson-Ketermaya Connection.

This photo was part of a "thank you" tweet from the Help Syria's Kids Twitter page (@HelpSyriasKids).

Adding with Hula Hoops

Kindergarten students used hula hoops to learn about addition with Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Rutkey.

The hula hoops represented number bonds and helped students understand the concept that two parts make a whole.

The children not in the number bonds used two different colored cubes to make the part/part whole on their own.

Bluehawks Help Hurricane Relief Efforts

Hudson High School senior, Maya Alvarez (pictured), worked with UNICEF to raise money for Puerto Rico. Maya set out to raise $500 for the hurricane relief effort, and thanks to the generous donations from staff and students at HHS, she exceeded her fundraising goal!

Kayleigh McCagg, another HHS senior, is also commended for her part in offering a Merry Christmas to children in Puerto Rico. She collected dozens of gifts during the holiday season for families affected by Hurricane Maria.

Career Exploration and Cookies

Junior high students are exploring different careers as part of the curriculum in Family & Consumer Sciences with Mrs. Ostrander.

Along with Mr. Peters’ Art students, they collaborated on a “Chip & Sip” project, which is a fun take on the popular Paint & Sip trend. FACS students baked delicious double chocolate chip cookies and Art students created unique package designs.

While enjoying cookies and juice, they talked about different career possibilities such as baker, pastry chef, graphic designer and marketing careers.

Principal receives donation check
Donation for Math & Science

Before the winter break in February, John L. Edwards Primary School received a $500 donation from Bell's Pond Extra Mart to support a rigorous Math and Science program for our youngest students.

Thank you to Danielle Martin (left), the Assistant Manager of the Bell's Pond Extra Mart, for stopping by JLE to present the check!

Jazz Musician Visits HHS

World renowned saxophone player and music educator, Jim Snidero, recently visited the Hudson High School Jazz Ensemble to share his expertise and help students with musical improvisation. Mr. Snidero also gave suggestions on jazz musicians who students could stream on Spotify to help them refine their musical sounds.

We'd like to extend a big "thank you" to John Keal Music Company for providing our students with this amazing educational opportunity!

Creative Career Luncheon Series

High school students heard about tech career possibilities from Jake Perry, a Program Manager at Etsy, during the most recent installment of HHS’ Creative Career Luncheon series. Mr. Perry is also a consultant for a law firm, helping to develop media and business strategies. His ultimate message was that there are many jobs in the tech industry that are not based in coding or computer programming.

Thank you to Mr. Perry for taking the time to speak with our students, Scali’s for supplying the lunch, and John Friedmann’s office for helping to coordinate the entire series!

3rd Annual Great Cardboard Boat Race

Hudson Senior High School hosted its third annual Great Cardboard Boat Race in December.

Students in the Transportation Systems class at HHS competed against Ichabod Crane’s Transportation Systems class as well as a Principles of Engineering class from Germantown.
