Hello DC Youth Advocates!

Ramina here, and welcome to week 2! Here's where our advocacy wheels hit the budget pavement.

Friendly reminder: each mailing will be broken up into 3+ sections:

  1. Now; covers what's happening this week
  2. How; highlights ways you can take action
  3. This week; a reminder of what we prepared you for last week
  4. Other upcoming hearings; hearings which we may not have direct advocacy asks for, but which may still be relevant to your work
  5. Next; provides a preview of the following week

And each mailing will include a downloadable PDF of all the content in each email. Whether you share that or simply forward this email, we need your help to spread the call to action.

We need you to stand up and speak out for and with our youth!

Now let's get to it.

Now

The Ask: We need 25 million dollars to fund afterschool and summer programming for all students at risk of academic failure due to poverty.

The Need: In October, the DC Policy Center released a Needs Assessment of Out-of-School Time Programs in the District of Columbia. The Needs Assessment showed that we are 5,900 slots short of providing afterschool programming and 25,600 slots short of providing summer programming for DC young people at risk of academic failure due to poverty.
