Apollo Capsule Brief

February/March 2018
2018 Senior Experience

On Tuesday, April 3, all Apollo Juniors are taking the ACT.  Classes will not be held for Seniors on April 3.  However, on the April 3, Seniors have a unique opportunity to participate in one of several options to further their preparation for post-secondary life. 9th and 10th grades will have class as usual.

All Apollo 12th grade students will be required to choose and arrange on their own one meaningful educational experience from a list of options to fulfill the requirements of their day.  Seniors will fill out a form which will be handed out in Planning Room on Thursday, March 22.  Seniors are to have a parent sign the form and return the form to the main office and be ready to attend his or her selected experience on April 3.

Seniors please carefully consider which of the following options you will choose and then arrange to complete your experience on April 3.

You may take the opportunity to:
  • Visit a post-secondary school of your choice
  • Job shadow in your desired career area
  • Perform community service at your chosen organization
  • Search and apply for scholarships
  • Search for employment
  • Be involved in a study group (ex: Advanced Placement small group)
You will need to make your own arrangements by contacting the college, employer or community service organization of your choice, and setting up the experience you desire.  You may also speak with your guidance counselor regarding the scholarship application process if you have not already done so.

The arrangements for your Senior Experience must be completed and turned into the main office by Wednesday, March 28, to be excused from school for the day.

Please work with your family, counselors and/or other staff to take full advantage of this unique educational opportunity! If you, or your family, have any questions, please contact Principal Al Johnson: al.johnson@isd742.org.  Thank you.

Apollo Student Named Youth of the Year

Kennethia Riley

Apollo senior Kennethia Riley was named Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year after being one of three finalists. Riley associates with the Roosevelt Boys and Girls Club where she was a junior volunteer and youth leader. However, in her spare time, she also volunteers at Place of Hope and other places within the community.

Riley started attending the Roosevelt Boys & Girls Club eight years ago. She is one of 11 kids, and her parents taught her to be persistent and to follow her dreams, even when through difficult times. Her membership at the Boys & Girls Club has instilled in Kennethia the value of setting and achieving goals.

Apollo Alumni

Lymarie Jimenez has the ability to transport anyone to a dystopian future 200 years from now where the world is highly technologically advanced. This Apollo High School 2000 graduate and published author has the talent for capturing readers and taking them through the twists and turns of conspiracies and secrets.

Her first published book, “Awaken” takes the reader on a journey of uncovering city secrets and finding that things aren’t always as they seem.

Jimenez completed a Bachelor’s Degree in English Writing and Literature from St Cloud State University (SCSU). Her mother was a Spanish professor at SCSU who had a passion for writing and has written several books herself.

“I dub myself the English version of her,” says Jimenez. “It started off as a bucket list thing. I challenged myself to write a novel. I’ve always had ideas in my head, but I’d never committed to it. A lot of people say, ‘I’m going to write a novel someday.’ I just decided I was going to do it.”

Fantasy books that are complex are her favorite kind of books to read. In fact, “Jurassic Park” is her favorite book and it inspired her first book “Awaken” under her pen name Georgina Kane.

“It’s the playing with genetics. ... My book has a lot to do with science and genetic manipulation,” explains Jimenez.

She had to do a lot of research on genetics and DNA splicing, and it took her two and a half years to write the book.

But writing isn’t her only talent.

Jimenez is a full-time executive culinary pastry chef in Florida, and she loves to make anything chocolate! She completed her culinary degree while also obtaining her bachelor’s degree. She is an artist in whatever she does.

As much as she loves chocolate and creating pastries, she is working her way toward becoming a full-time author. Her plan is to have the manuscript of the sequel to “Awaken” completed by the end of 2018.
