East Lothian man given £40,000 fine and community payback order for illegal tyre site

An East Lothian sole trader was fined £40,000 and given a Community Payback Order, to undertake 240 hours of unpaid work, at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday 14 March for illegally storing waste tyres.
SEPA's Chief Executive, Terry A'Hearn, says those who do not meet Scotland's environmental laws will be held to account.

Alistair Marshall trading as A. M. Transport pled guilty to depositing and keeping waste tyres on his site at Fenton Barns, Drem, and another site at Annfield Farm, Tranent, without the required Waste Management Licence. The case was investigated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and a report was sent to the Procurator Fiscal. Mr Marshall pled guilty at the Intermediate Diet on 12 September 2017 and the Sheriff deferred sentence for a period of time.

World Water Day

As Scotland's national flood forecasting, flood warning, and strategic flood risk management authority, SEPA is working hard to help Scotland be better prepared for future increased flooding and reduce the impact it can have on your life.

This World Water Day we urged people across Scotland to sign up to SEPA's Floodline service, which provides free, local flooding information by phone or text, helping you prepare for, and cope with, the impacts of flooding.

Earth Hour Scotland

If everyone lived as we do in Scotland, we would need three planets to sustain ourselves.

Watch SEPA's Chief Executive, Terry A'Hearn, encourage everyone to take part in Earth Hour Scotland tomorrow, Saturday 24 March.  Join WWF Scotland's big lights out and switch your lights off between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
Sauchiehall Street fire

SEPA's Airborne Hazard Emergency Response (AHER) Service was deployed to Glasgow City Centre yesterday as part of the multi-agency response to monitor air quality from the fire on Sauchiehall Street.

Throughout the duration of the incident we monitored the air quality in the local area, until the risk had reduced to a level where the partner agencies agree monitoring can be stepped down.
In the event of a serious incident – such as a chemical fire, an explosion at an industrial site or a release of gases – our AHER field response team can be deployed at short notice to the site of the incident.
