Dear Friends of Build a School in Burma,

Since early January, I've taught social enterprise and English at a large monastery school in Mandalay. It’s been exhilarating and a challenge. I have been lucky to have ambitious and dedicated students, but learned how hard children from poor rural villages must struggle to get even a rudimentary education in Myanmar, let alone to attend high school or university. Your support of BSB has helped to make a path to education possible for thousands more Burmese children like these.

Also, I have re-learned that English is a very difficult and inconsistent language! Try explaining to yourself rules for when to use prepositions like in, on, of, about, through, between, among - -and how to differentiate among (between?) them.  And don't even think about when to use and how to conjugate the past conditional verb tense!

Meanwhile, Country Director Naing Lin Swe and I have worked to fulfill donors’ goals for school projects. Board members and donors Dan Kipp and Jennifer Chan visited and toured existing and planned BSB schools. Seven new schools are already under construction or funded so far this year, and another four are actively under review. Naing Naing has done an excellent job all around; it's enlightening to watch and listen while he works with villagers and school committees. We have partnered with several new international donors to sponsor individual schools, including Willis Phua of Singapore and his employer Schindler Elevator Company, Norway's Destination Orphanage, and Janaka Liyanage from Sri Lanka.

We continue to work to fine tune the solar electricity systems installed for two schools in San Chaung Lay village and plan to provide solar power for at least three new village schools and their students during 2018.

Thank you for your continued support!
